Young, scared and glad that I went with my gutt feeling
Alright ladies...I am 32 years old and when I found out that my uterus was prolapsin and sent to a see a female gyni and then informed that I was not a candidate for surgery. When I questioned what I am to do, she told me that I was to wait til things got worse. I said "really wait for my uterus to fall out"...I was appauled when her answer was "yes". WOW. I am glad that I followed my gutt and asked my GP for a 2nd opinion and was then referred to a male gyni. After 30 minutes of chatting about my health history, previous surgeries and then an exam...he informed me that not only do I have a uterus prolapse, but I also have a cystocele (bladder prolapse) and rectocele (rectum prolapse) and my fascious tissue along my vaginal walls are basically non existant therefore my entire pelvic floor is prolapsing. Think of how mad I was when I found that out from a MALE gyni. If only I could speak to the female gyni and inform her of how stupid she is.
Anyway I am nervous as hell. My surgery date is January 7, 2009 and am wanting some info on what to expect immediately after surgery, while in the hospital and the recovery period. When can I expect to get back to light duty housework (although I plan to milk it if I can, my hubby works away therefore I dont think I will be able to milk it too long with 2 young active in sports boys) and most important of all SEX.
Any info that you could provide would be great.

Young, scared and glad that I went with my gutt feeling
Hey Tanyareiber, hello to a fellow islander, I am just north of you, close to the bungy zone.
So first, what type of surgery? I just had a TVH, performed by <Doctor's name removed per the site TOS>, he was great, had a bit of an issue with a 6th floor nurse, but went over all good!
I was told do nothing for the first 2 weeks, I have 4 kids, so I was in the hospital for 2 nights, and home in my bedroom for 2 more, after that I stayed in the living room giving orders. I am now 15 days post-op, feel pretty good, although tired. And when I do overdue it I feel more tired and achey. I am vaccuming lightly, doing light house work, but still being careful, my 16mth old weighs 36lbs, so I still cant pick her up.
Reading a few threads about sex, it terrifies me, I believe you need to get the green light from your ob/gyn before you go there! lol! I think it is a standard 6 weeks.

thank goodness you seeked a second opinion. It sounds like you will have a lot of repair work done and a long recovery. Pamper yourself and give yourself plenty of time to heal

Young, scared and glad that I went with my gutt feeling
I am having a partial hysterectomy...keeping ovaries. Supposedly the surgery will be done vaginally, revomal of uterus, bladder and rectum lift (the rectum is pretty minor but might as well be done at the same time), then both front and back of my vaginal walls will be rebuilt to prevent future prolapses. Although my doc (PJ) at the hospital (can't say the name because the filters will remove the docs name), he works across from the hospital, is a bit concerned because of my age that the reconstruct wont last my 54 some odd years of life let.
Yes this is pretty major surgery so like i mentioned I will be milking it for what I can until my hubby returns to work.
I will be waiting for the approval from the gyni before I proceed with sex, I really dont want to risk the surgery at all.
Thanks for your responses, it is great to know that others are out there with similar scenarios. I do believe that we all heal differently due to our body make up, but still nice to know that the support is out of with live people going through it.
Cheers,
Tanya

Young, scared and glad that I went with my gutt feeling
Hey,
I'm having all of this stuff done Jan. 12th. I don't know what to do about my ovaries. My doctor said it is up to me. Everyone that I know that has kept their ovaries end-up having them removed. I want this to be my last surgery. I've been living with the rectum part for 9 yrs. My muscle tore with my first child. Everyone says the rectum is the worst part. Let me know how your surgery goes. I hope you do well and have a quick recovery.

I too am hoping for a quick recovery. My body does tend to heal quickly, but this is a pretty major surgery. Would be different it if was just a hysterectomy without the lifts and rebuild, but hey such is life. Might as well have it all done at the same time. My rectum thank god is not that bad, the bladder and uterus is the worst, the bladder is actually holding up my uterus, therefore the need to remove my uterus is crucial because it would just fall out anyway. I wish you luck too. I am not too sure if I will get on here immediately after the surgery. Maybe send me a remindering asking how it went so that I can advise. Cheers

Howdy.
I am 34. I am post op 22 days. I had a total admoninal hysterectomy, bladder sling, urethra sling, anterior repairs, cervix removed. (kept ovaries and tubes).
In January this year I had a rectocele repair done. (posterior repairs)
I sorta wish I didn't need to go through two operations, but I can't tell the furture. Four months after my rectocele op, my utures and bladder prolapsed too!
What can you expect? From my experience (and remembering, everyone is different) it's best to not overdo things. I had to return to work after only two weeks after my rectocele, because my secretary quit and I still wonder if that helped bring on my other prolapses.
Sex. Don't rush it, having posterior and anterior repairs (meaning back and front walls of vagina) may cause some altered sensations and scaring might alter how you feel about being intimate. It's not all bad, just take things one step at a time, slowly, etc and you have to speak up if it hurts, etc. Try different things, etc. Don't be a matyr. I would have to say it altered our initmacy, but not for the worse.
I have written other posts about this subject, so if you want more info, find my older posts.
House work. Take six weeks off! Does it matter if the house is not spotless every day? Let DH or someone else take care of you, you do deserve it.
Please remember that you do not want to go back to hospital for more surgery because you were impatient to have a clean house, or for sexual needs. There may be hundreds of internal stitches and you only get one chance to heal well. Hysterectomy (even without repair work) is one of the biggest operations that women will undergo. Don't rush it.

You only have one chance at a great recovery so take it easy. I am 5 weeks post op & have learned to live with the dirt & fuzz balls on the floors. It is not worth me hurting myself to try to keep things that clean. It will all wait. I too would take the 6 weeks before you vacuum. Best wishes.
