Re: Ablation or Hysterectomy?

I'm not going to read anyone else's answers. I'll just give you mine. It's easier.

I had ablation done 3 years ago and it was great! I was left with a small period. I had my tubes tied at the same time and a bladder sling put in so it was a 6 week recovery but very easy, I just had to be easy with lifting. We did it 9 weeks post partum while my baby was under 15 pounds which is the lifting limit for the sling.

I was left with a small, very manageable period. My neighbor had it done last year and she has no period at all.

In the past several months my periods started to get worse and all sorts of other things began to fall apart. Prolapse was beginning etc... It was definitely time for a hysterectomy and I'm 3 weeks post op now from a TVH. I haven't discussed with my doctor what he actually removed and what the pathology report stated but I'm 100% better off then I was 4 weeks ago!!

Personally, ablation is a pretty easy procedure. I'd go with that first to see if it works. It may. It may not. You really don't know until you have it done. It's less expensive and it's no down time.

A hysterectomy is major surgery. I never knew the meaning of that until I had one. There are so many variables and so much of what seems like a complication is really just a variable. Each and every woman is different and each and every surgery is different and one misplaced fibroid can cause major problems and one big one might go undetected for quite some time.

I think you have to trust your instincts as to what is right for you. I recommend ablation to absolutely everyone I meet when the subject ever comes up. Changed my life for the better in sooooooooooooooo many ways.

In my experience through this I really came to learn I'd been masking a lot. A lot of pain, a lot of discomfort and lost a lot of life because of it. Heavy periods aren't worth it if you have a reasonable solution. Pain and loss of quality of life is soooooo not worth it. You need to do something to solve your problem. There is no wrong answer, simply more steps in the journey.

Good luck!

Re: Ablation or Hysterectomy?

Well after careful consideration and knowing how my odds are usually I decided against the ablation and to just go with the hysterectomy. I told my doctor that I would be that one person that the ablation wouldn't work for. I just went to see him for my pathology results from the hysterectomy that I had on the 7th of Feb. and he gave me a big "ada boy" for my decision. He seemed to be more pushing for me to have the ablation but let me make the decision and went with what I had decided. The results from the pathology showed that I had Adenomyosis which he explained to me that the ablation he had been pushing for would have failed to give me any relief from and I would have been going in for a hysterectomy anyway. I was so relieved when I heard this. When I read the report from the pathologist it said that my endometrium was between 23 and 26 day of the cycle when in fact I was only 13 to 14 days... I guess when I took into consideration the fact that nothing about my body is "normal" and to go with my "gut instinct" which told me to just get the hysterectomy instead of messing around with the ablation I came up with the decision to just have the hysterectomy... Which in the end was what I had to do anyway... Thank you everyone for the information that you provided... I am so greatful to done with the decision making process... To have the surgery over with and be on the way to recovery...
