Straining to have a bowel movement 1 day post hysterectomy

I took a stool softener today..I feel the urge to go so I tried and not thinking I strained. Now I'm scared.. What signs do I look for to know if I've pulled something ?

! You'd probably see or feel it if you've pulled something - vaginal bleeding, sharp pain that won't go away.

Easy does it, and don't panic... it takes many women about 2-3 days before some relief (I was in that camp), and pain killers often contribute to constipation. I opted for occasional senna tea every 3 days as the stool softener didn't seem to do anything for me - but I don't recommend that right away. It could take the softener a while to work, per the label.

Veggies, fiber (Fiber One original cereal), prunes (ick), foods with magnesium and water-water-water so that what you're eating gets moisture. Also, prop your feet up on a low stool (7-9") when you think you're ready to go - it sort of "unhinges" the colon like people did in the days we had to squat, before indoor plumbing.
