MRI anxiety

I am just writing to share my experience in case others are having the same anxiety about having a MRI that I had. I am scheduled for a robotic myomectomy in a couple of weeks and had a MRI this evening to map the fibroids. I am a tad claustrophobic and was terrified about the prospect of going into a noisy tube for a period of time. To be clear, it's not that I thought I wouldn't be able to get out. It's just that the thought of being enclosed like that was making me very anxious. The doctor prescribed me some medication to calm my nerves, but I wound up not needing it. At this particular facility they were very sympathetic to my fears. They gave me a "bigger" MRI machine because I'm claustrophobic (though I'm not sure how it could be smaller). Also, the machine was open on both ends, they were able to put me in feet first, and the technician allowed me to tilt my head backwards so that I could look outside of the machine. They also gave me headphones so that I could listen to classical music (my choice). The machine was very loud, but somehow the music helped. My mom and dad also came to the appointment and were waiting for me in the waiting room. I am always very independent (as I have no partner, and have to be). But it was really nice to have support. It helped! I just wanted to post this in case someone else is having the same type of anxiety I was having. It was as bad as I had imagined! So happy it's over.

Re: MRI anxiety

I am very nervous about MRI's so it's always good to hear from someone who made it through. I suspect I'll need the meds but you didn't, so that gives me hope. I don't even have one scheduled right now, I just think ahead. Thanks for the encouragement.

Re: MRI anxiety

I must be an oddity because I like MRIs. I had one a few weeks ago. I was offered the headphones with music. I just put on the headphones, but no music. I sort of like the random sounds the machine makes. I don't mind the small space, I feel safe and cozy in there with a blanket. I did notice that if I looked back, I could see out. I usually fall asleep in there. As always, they checked on me after every 3 or 4 minutes and told me I could move my arms to scratch my face if I wanted. By the time I get out they usually ask me if I took a sedative. I tell them no, just got sleepy. My last tech told me they made him sleepy too.

Re: MRI anxiety

I had anxiety with my first one. It was along time ago when it was open on one enomly. I was given a pill to,relax. The second time, it was open on both ends, so I was not anxious at all. It was nice that they upgraded to those..
