Total vaginal hysterectomy (TVH) on 6/23 and I'm freaking out with little support.
TVH is a vaginal hysterectomy, right? I will be having my hysterectomy on Monday. I cancelled last year because I was too afraid, and then my May 5th surgery date was postponed because I had bronchitis and the flu, but it would appear that all systems are go this time around. My doctor has been telling me to have the surgery for the past few years, but I was having a hard time emotionally deciding to do that. My uterus is 3x the normal size, and my uterus and cervix are down so low that I'm surprised they haven't torn themselves out by now. I used to love running and doing races, but now I can't even walk a slow mile without being unable to stand for 3 days. I've gained a ton of weight over the past 1-2 years because of this. I am very much looking forward to life without pain and being able to be more active with my family again, but I am terrified about the surgery, and freaking out about how I'm going to be able to pull off the recovery time needed. I'm also freaking out over how alone I'm feeling in this process, and I haven't even had the surgery yet. My husband is a HUGE help, so I'm sure he'll be fine taking care of me and the kids over the next few weeks (albeit a little grumpy perhaps LOL), but it's times like these that I wish I was closer to my neighbors, or that I had the type of friends who just stop by to say hi. As it is, no one around me can relate, so I get the feeling that they pretty much don't want to be involved until it's all over and I'm back on my feet. I understand that it's hard to relate to something you haven't been through, but I could really use the support right now, or to at least feel like they care.

Re: TVH in 4 days and I'm freaking out with little support.
I just wanted to reply so you would know you're not alone. I was scheduled to have tvh a week ago, but had to cancel, due to money problems. Now I am waiting for a new date. I have fibroids, constant pain and bleeding. I never ran, but am a walker. I am going to miss walking every day when I have my surgery. I don't have to worry about recovery for work, because I am a stay-at-home mom, but I am a little compulsive with my daily schedule of cleaning and other stuff that I do. This rescheduling business is STRESSFUL! I had my bag packed and everything, then a week thinking I wasn't going to have it, and now I am approved again. It is an emotional roller coaster.

Hi sisters!
I just had to say something after reading your posts. You will be able to walk after surgery. In fact, it is highly recommended you do some walking. It helps prevent blood clots, helps your lungs rid themselves of the anesthesia, helps wake up your bowels and get them going again, helps to rid your body of gas which relieves some of the awful pains it can cause, and it's a wonderful boredom buster when you feel cooped up!! Not to mention it helps start burning those dreaded calories! You don't have to walk miles or start training for a marathon, just start slow, short trips around in the house or driveway. You will really be amazed how fast your body tolerates the walking and can slowly build up to walking around the block and then more!
As for friends checking in, I can relate to feeling a bit abandoned there as well. Not one of my friends here in town called to see about me, and even now at 12 weeks post op, still do not talk about my surgery. I found great comfort on this website where no one fusses that you're being selfish or whiny or obsessing about your surgery. We've all been there so we understand!! Just remember to take care of yourself. Ask your DH for help (remember? "In sickness or in health. For better or worse."). Also, keep in mind it takes weeks to months to be completely healed. It isn't a race. There are no gold medals for getting there first. Listen to your body and you'll get through this!! Hugs and prayers to you!

Re: TVH in 4 days and I'm freaking out with little support.
It's great that you have a very supportive DH! I know mine is worried sick, though I'm not, so I'm trying not to be too happy around him, lol. I'm planning to count on him, my mom and my kids. My neighbors don't know and while I'm friendly with several of them, this isn't really something I feel like sharing. Ditto church members. So I don't have a wide support circle, but the one that I do have, I feel I'll be able to rely on.
Try and think of how active you'll be able to be once this surgery and recovery are over. You'll be able to run races again and you'll be able to do it pain-free. You'll probably be able to drop the extra weight you put on and be on the road to a healthier you. Focus on the positives. Like you, I scared myself off this surgery last year, but not again.
And yes, TVH is vaginal. My uterus is too big for that, so while I was looking forward to something minimally invasive (because I'm the worst at having to sit still), I've accepted that I'll get a TAH. Life will be better whichever way this uterus goes.

Re: Total vaginal hysterectomy (TVH) on 6/23 and I'm freaking out with little support.
Thanks ladies! Tomorrow is the big day and I am completely freaking out haha!
onlunchbreak, I now know what you mean about the financial part. The hospital called me on Friday and told me this is going to cost us a few thousand dollars AFTER insurance and I thought I was going to puke.
AngelLissa, I'm sorry that you seem to have similar support.....or lack of. I know they want me to "suck it up", but I really am hoping that they will come through for me in the end, and at least call or stop by to keep me from going insane from the isolation. I'm glad to hear that I'll be able to walk around. I have a treadmill in my bedroom, so hopefully I'll be able to slowly increase how far I can go at a slow pace.
HappyDee, my uterus size frightens me a little. A friend of mine had her hysterectomy 2 weeks ago and she had some complications due to them having to pull and tug so hard to get her out. Her uterus was a normal size, while mine is already 3 times the normal size. I'm not sure HOW he's going to get it out vaginally, but I have a feeling I'm going to feel the struggle afterward. I really am looking forward to being active after this. Just the thought of being able to walk a mile without hurting for days afterward makes me smile. I've already set my sights at working towards a half marathon in March of next year, and a 5K and hopefully also a 10K in October of this year.
Thanks again! It does make me feel better to know you guys are out here. I ordered a bunch of stuff from the hystersisters website store, and I have to say that I ADORE this "What 250,000 Women Know About Hysterectomy" booklet they sent to me along with my order. I was completely lost without this, and the booklet has answer almost all of my questions. It has also given my husband a good idea of what I'll be going through and a road map of where I should be progress-wise over the duration of the next couple of months. Anyone who has an upcoming hysterectomy, make sure you get one of those booklets! I think they will mail it to you for free.

Re: Total vaginal hysterectomy (TVH) on 6/23 and I'm freaking out with little support.
After my hysterectomy, I didn't want anyone dropping by. I had my mom and my DH. The first week I could get up and walk around, barely manage a shower every day, and still I looked like something from fright night. My hair stayed a mess because of lying down, getting up, repositioning, etc. I was always either too hot or too cold, so I was usually wet and sweaty. I didn't like anything touching my tummy, so I wore an ugly gown with leg warmers, and I was weepy and grumpy and sleepy. Not a pretty picture. I think if a friend had shown up at the door, I would have hidden in my bedroom. Oh and that's not to mention that at every opportunity I had to pass gas, I took it. So, I was happy no one showed up for a while. Hopefully your recovery is "prettier," but maybe that may give you some perspective? I'm betting you will do great!
