Question About Bleeding, Long Post

Hi all,
I have had opinions from 3 gynecologists regarding a hysterectomy. I am 53, menopausal for 2 years now and have lots of small fibroids, the largest are only 5cm, my uterus is about 10 weeks in size. My symptoms are mainly ones of pressure, constant need to urinate and back pain. All three have said they would only do an abodominal hysterectomy. They all do vaginal, but their reasons ranged from my never having had children (uterus too high?) to the fibroids being on the sides of my uterus where the blood vessels/arteries are probably entangled in the fibroids. I have a fourth opinion scheduled with a new doctor (head of gynecological residency program at the local teaching hospital) in Oct. According to the hospital (and they have the morcellator) he is the only one in town who will do LSH. The reason for the Oct. appointment is that he is so new (comes from another state) he doesn't have contracts with the insurance companies in order. Finally, my question.....Since May, I have been spotting or staining nearly every day. Maybe one day a week I don't notice the blood. I had an endometrial biopsy in Dec. 2006 and everything was good. I have never had a bad pap. Last ultrasound was in March 2007....nothing out of order noticed but the fibroids, my ovaries were not visualized. Do you think there is any need to see a doctor about the bleeding before my Oct. appointment? I'm thinking it's probably the fibroids. But I see so many cautions about bleeding in menopausal women. Any ideas please?

Question About Bleeding, Long Post

Sorry, I forgot some important info. For two years I have taken 2mg of estradiol and 100mg prometrium. Prior to that I had 8 years of unopposed estrogen for hot flashes & dryness, no progesterone as I had my period regularly even with the supplemental estrogen.

Since your previous biopsy was 5 months before the unexplained bleeding, IMO, it wouldn't hurt to seek the advice of a gynecologic oncologist.

Not meant to scare you but I never had a bad pap either.

Question About Bleeding, Long Post

Hi Rose.Addie,

I too had fibroids in pre-op. My 1st Dr. wanted to do an abdominal hyst and said I was *not* a candidate for a less invasive hyst, due to the size of my fibroids. My 2nd Dr. recommended a LSH and I am still very pleased with the results.

On the spotting...I have seen some fibroid ladies post that they have some extra spotting during the month. That being said...I agree with Kristi...it might be a good idea to call a gyneo Dr. - just to be sure, since your next appointment is not until Oct. Just to be on the safe side.

Sending best wishes. We Hyster Sisters are here to help if we can.

I agree with the ladies here. Any abnormal bleeding should be reported and investigated, just to be on the safe side. Let us know what happens!
