Considering SAH

I'm considering having a SAH (fibroids & ovarian cysts), but I'm having trouble weighing out the possible pros & cons. I'm 41 and my doctor has been telling me that my uterus is the size of a 10 week pregnancy for several years now. I've been getting ovarian cysts since I was 27. I was scheduled for surgery 14 years ago to remove a large cyst, when it ruptured on its own the night before surgery. I have continued to get them ever since, although it isn't anything I can't live with. I also believe I have alot of scar tissue from a cesarean I had 20 years ago. Anytime I try to exercize using my abdominal muscles I end up with pain, swelling and what feels like internal bleeding. My menstral cycles are all over the place and have been for years. Quite often twice a month and occasionally lasting up to 21 days. The 21 days aren't as bad as they sound, usually pretty light and sometimes just spotting ("it's the not so fresh feeling that gets to me"). I've tried taking pills to help, but didn't like the side effects, including headaches and mood swings. Maybe I'm way off, but I almost feel like removing parts that aren't being used anymore anyways would be more natural in the end. After I mentioned it, my doctor told me that he thinks I would be much happier if I had a hysterectomy. Despite the cysts, he thinks I should be able to keep my ovaries. I'm hoping to keep one and stay off HRT. Aside from hormones, my biggest fear is summer time and waterskiing. It's my favorite time of the year and I'm still fortunate enough to feel alright in a two piece bathing suit. If I'm lucky enough to stay off the HRT, is there any weight gain or permanent swelling associated with a SAH?

Considering SAH

Hi Laurie

Having surgery is a major decision so make sure it's one you are totally comfortable with. It never hurts to get a second opinion or to consider other options. You may want to take a look at the hysterectomy alternatives and options forum and see if there are other sisters going through similar experiences.

Whatever you decide we will support you 100%!

"Swelly belly" is the notorious friend that usually accompanies our surgery. Usually, it's only a temporary friend - most of our swelly bellies will be almost or completely back to normal within weeks or months (it's completely individual).

As far as permanent weight gain goes...again, it really depends on the individual. I didn't gain any weight - if anything, I lost a few pounds during the initial recovery period that have stayed off!

Regardless - best of luck with your decision!
