I was scared to have a hysterectomy until..

First off I would like to say that surgery scared me half to death for many reasons. I am also a "factual" person. If I see it done, I can do it. If I research it I feel more comfortable.

After speaking with my wonderful doctor I was still left wondering just exactly how this procedure was done and what after would be like. I called all of my female family members that have had the procedure done but it just wasn't good enough. I set out online looking for videos. I watched a few of the computer animated ones but still felt "blah" about it all.

I feel like I should add that blood freaks me out and I can admit I am a tad squeamish. I realized quickly though that I was going to have to suck it up and just watch a video of the actual procedure. With my husband by my side I founda 45 min video of a laparoscopic hysterectomy. I hit play and was instantly drawn in to the soothing voice of the doctor. There were no first incisions made (thankfully!) So there was little to no blood to be queasy over. I watched the entire process amazed at how quickly and cleanly it was done.

I would recomend to anyone out there like me to get online and find a video of the actual procedure. You can see exactly what will happen and be able to see all of the safety measures they take so that you will come out feeling as good as possible. It really helped me and maybe it can help you too! Best wishes to anyone set to have this done!

Re: I was scared to have a hysterectomy until..

I waited until months after my hysterectomy to watch a full-length video of a daVinci procedure similar to mine. I was so curious and it was fascinating. Not gory at all, very interesting and impressive. However, I saw another video of a different procedure and it would have scared me if I had seen it beforehand. The one I liked was actually broadcast on TV and was done at St.Lukes? Hospital in Missouri I think.

I done that exact thing! I watched two and quickly realized that I should've waited til AFTER my surgery to watch one. ...It freaked me out watching them make the abdominal incision then from there just pull it apart (tear) with their hands. ...So I stopped watching them and now I'm felling a bit better about it...Wasn't the smartest thing for me to have done but I love reading everyones experience and questions on here!!

It is really neat! I kind of wish I could of gotten a dvd of my surgery just to see what it was like.

Thankfully the 3 different videos I watched started after the first incisions.

If you like facts I found some peace after reading medical journal articles on pubmed. The satisfaction and success rates after the procedure are very high. That helped put my mind at ease.

I have been reading a lot about it as well. More so after than before actually. I'm still so early in recovery that I'm not experiencing the good stuff yet, but I am really excited for it to come!
