As with just about anything, do seek your doctor's approval. I'm a bit surprised that he's not going to examine you for proper healing beforehand. If you have a vaginal cuff (you don't mention the type of surgery you had), that needs to be healed well enough.
Not sure what your concerns might be, but there are a number of articles about resuming sex post-op. My own experience at 6 weeks is that it wasn't fireworks and rainbows the first time: we were both hesitant, he was concerned about hurting me and I don't think I achieved orgasm... it was more just seeing if all the parts worked! ) I felt burning and itching afterwards, and that was likely due to vaginal dryness, even though I retained my ovaries and thought I was self-lubed enough. Since then, we've used lubrication as part of foreplay and I've not had that issue.
