Catheter is Finally Out

I had a TVH and bladder sling exactly a week ago today. I can't believe last week at this time I was just coming out of anesthesia. When they removed the catheter two days after my surgery, they said I was retaining too much urine. They had me drink and walk the halls for an hour and try again. Same result. So, they had to had two nurses pin down my arms and put the cathether back in. They drained it and I was sent home with a giant bag. I was born with a urethral stricture and had bladder surgery as a child, so catheters are extremely painful for me. I had it in for four days and every time I tried to walk, blood would drain into the tube, so I stayed put again. Finally, yesterday I went to the urologist and he filled my bladder until it was painful and I tried to pee again. Yeah! I was so relieved. Today is my first shower without a catheter in for a week. It's silly, but I didn't realize how much I appreciate the freedom. I am still sore, but happy.

Re: Catheter is Finally Out

Wow what a week you have had. I had a catheter after my surgery for about 24 hours and I was miserable with it. You have gone thru alot! I'm so happy and glad for you that it's finally out and you're peeing okay! Hopefully the soreness will be temporary and you'll be feeling better soon!

Re: Catheter is Finally Out

Library Lady67,
I know exactly how you feel. I just got mine out yesterday, a week after my surgery due to extensive bladder repair that neither me nor the doctor was expecting. I didn't keep the big bag when I left the hospital but I wish I had because I had to have mine drained every 2 hours so sleeping was out of the question. It was such a relief to have it removed and to go to the bathroom myself even though that really hurts right now too.
