Healing the scar

Any suggestions on helping to heal/reduce the scar. I had a complete hysterectomy with both ovaries removed-cancer on one ovarian tumor and uterus & ligament-so my incision is very long.

Re: Healing the scar

Vitamin E. Puncture the vial with a pin, and squeeze it onto your incision. It helps soften the scar, and fades it with time. I used it on both my C-section scars, and now I am using it on my hysterectomy scar.

Re: Healing the scar

Agreed - vitamin E or argan oil... however check with your surgeon first... you will want them healed before adding anything unless cleared

Re: Healing the scar

The only thing that I found that was scientifically proven to reduce the scar or at least produce the best scar possible is a silicone scar sheet. They are available at drug stores under different brand names but be aware that they are rather expensive. We also sell them in our HysterSister store. I used to cut the ones I got into strips that just fit the incision and washed them instead of replacing them due to the cost. The same strip lasted me more than 3 months.

It would be great if you could start as soon as your incision is healed as I waited too long while I fooled around with scar lotions like Bio-oil. I have horrible skin that scars badly and I didn't find out about the sheets until I was 3 or 4 months post-op. The scar sheets did help but like I said, I should have started them as soon as my incision was healed. I did use them on an incision due to a mole removal and my skin healed beautifully so I know they work if used early.

Keeping your incision well moisturized and gentle massage will also help your skin heal the best it can.

I hope this helps.

Re: Healing the scar

My doctor recommended Mederma and it appears to be working so far.

Re: Healing the scar

My doctor gave me a silicon patch "Oleeva" the third week after my TAH, I'm 7 weeks post op and my scar looks amazing! No keloids, it's not dark, so I think the patch does work.
