That man is a keeper. That made me smile (and I needed that smile-- thank you).

I do understand. Its a difficult surgery emotionally. You know its okay, you know you made the right decision. But its still a very emotional recovery. ((hugs)).

Being sick doesn't help. Gosh, you poor thing. I hope you feel better soon. I so worried about a cold or flu those first few weeks.

I am sorry to hear of a Sister in pain. But I feel like what you are going through is probably normal.

I thought I'd feel the loss of my uterus, even though I have one healthy child, because I always felt very "womanly" when I'd start my period. Periods would last about a week and they'd be heavy, and for a day or two I might be doubled over with cramps, but with that first indication that I'd started, I felt "different," that's the only way to describe it. So I thought Wow...as much as I won't miss the actual bleeding every month and all that goes with it, I may miss that "female" ritual.

So far, I haven't. Maybe it's too soon to tell. Maybe my depression over this will come next month, or next year. But I have found that since the surgery, my focus is on (1) BEING EXTREMELY PROUD OF MYSELF FOR COMING THROUGH SUCH MAJOR SURGERY SO WELL and (2) REGAINING MY HEALTH AND MY STRENGTH AND MY BEAUTY. Just, becoming a better version of myself. My uterus has nothing to do with any of that.

I had a miscarriage after I had my daughter and then never got pregnant again. I do see babies and wonder if I selfishly let time go by when I could have added to our family. I think the whole finality of it is shocking. When I catch myself remembering what the pre-op nurse explained to me...that I would be sterile after this procedure...I kind of gasp and catch my breath. It's so harsh when you hear it out loud, even if you already know it in your heart.

I am looking on this as a new chapter in my life. Getting rid of the problems (in my case, it was cancer) and moving forward with a healthier body to run around in and have adventures in...a healthier body to be a woman in.

If you find youself really struggling with losing your uterus, I'm sure your doctor could suggest some people you could talk to, just to get you over the hump of the initial shock and difficulty. While everyone here has been through the surgery (or is about to go through it), our experiences are all different. You are not alone in your sadness. Anything we can do to help you, please let us know.

Horizon,
Thank you so much. I am glad you are comfortable with the loss of your uterus. You may never feel the depression of the loss (hopefully). You suggested I talk to some people, well thats why I am here. There is no other comfort I get than getting support from those who REALLY "know" what I feel and have gone through it. Each day at a time right?

I too, had problems from the day I started (9 yrs old) til the day I had surgery (May 15, 07) In fact, my uterus had to give me a farewell by visiting me one last time. My surgery was on a Tues and I started on the Friday before surgery. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to have the surgery while on my period. Well, my doctor said, "if you do thats no problem for us. It will be a reminder why your having the surgery". It was kinda of strange waking up Tue morning on my period, going to the hospital, pad and all, and then waking up from surgery with no period and no bleeding since.

I was in someways happy about the surgery. I found out last Oct I would be having the surgery and found comfort in the months about it. That's why it is weird to me that it is now hitting me that I lost something that represents a part of being a women. But, I hold my head up and know that I made the right decision.

Along the way you stumble, perhaps even fall. But that too, is normal and to be expected.
We get up, get back on our feet. Chastened but wiser, and continue on down the road!
