What to tell your colleagues (esp. men) about your hysterectomy?
I will be out of work, of course, for a long time after the surgery (4-6 weeks). I have a lot of health conditions so I'm not going to rush back for fear of complications. I'm in a management position so there is a LOT of stuff I have to plan for while I'm out. Who will manage my staff, finance issues, etc. etc. I've told a few people, mostly women what the deal is, but I'm wondering what you ladies say to your colleagues, specifically the men? Some are nice and don't push when I say "I'm having surgery and will be out for a month." But, of course others want to know what it is. If I say "it's personal," that's a dead giveaway. But, at the same time, I don't want to make them uncomfortable. So far I've just been very blunt "I'm having a hysterectomy" and folks kind of drop it. The women say sorry and the men say nothing. Ugh just don't know how best to deal with it. Also, I live in a VERY small town, so word will likely spread. Maybe I should just head it off and tell folks..?

Re: What to tell your colleagues (esp. men)?
It sounds to me like you are already handling it well, if someone asks just tell them. I told the people I needed and wanted to tell and I was very honest and put it bluntly as well. After my surgery I have chatted with people I haven't talked to in a while and if they ask how I am doing, I tell them I'm recovering from a hysterectomy. How they process my news is their problem not mine, I'm cool with it!
Oh and If your town wants to spread the word, let them! Saves you talking!!

I told them that it was a woman issue and then they could think about it... My boss and another man( wife had hysterectomy) were told the real reason.

It's just so much easier when it's an arm or leg - see a new knee! Look at the scar - wow! okay move on. With a hyst. it's not visual (that you can share lol). There is no cast to sign your name on! lol

Re: What to tell your colleagues (esp. men) about your hysterectomy?
I, personally, don't have a problem in telling anyone I am waiting for a hysterectomy. I have even told complete strangers lol. I also have to go for colonoscopies due to bowel cancer being in my family. A lot of people could be cured of bowel cancer if only they would overcome their embarrassment in talking about bowel movements etc. I think that the more we shroud certain issues the less likely people will get the help they need as soon as symptoms present themselves.

Re: What to tell your colleagues (esp. men) about your hysterectomy?
I'm the head of HR at a tech company. You're covered under medical privacy laws so if you don't want to share that you had a hysterectomy, you don't have to. I told people I was having surgery because I needed to create a back up plan while I was out. I was definitely less comfortable telling the men, including my boss that I was getting a hysterectomy. I was going through my own feelings about having hysterectomy. Some of them didn't want to pry and ask anyway. I told my boss and another exec that I it was "female stuff and that it was a routine procedure." They were a little embarrassed and didn't ask more. Sometimes people are just being nice and supportive by wanting to know indirectly that it's not life threatening or anything terrible. Which I appreciate. But I wanted them to know enough that I wasn't going to be back within a week!
