what s the blood for

Just wondering what the blood tests are for. I know that anemia is one. what are the others?

Mine tested for type and cross match. If you need blood during surgery they need to know this. I forget what the others were for.

For preop they are testing the blood to see what your blood type is in case you need a transfusion during surgery. Depending on your situation they may also look at different chemicals in your blood or even hormone levels.

Mine also checked for infection, liver & kidney functions, etc to make sure everything was normal for surgery. Good luck on the 18th!!!!

Even though I'm 47 years old, they do a pregnancy test on every woman here who is scheduled for surgery. I thought it was very stupid but the doctor was adament that all women who have even a remote possibility of being pregnant are tested and their surgery is cancelled.

Type and cross (blood type) in case of the need for a blood tranfusion, pregnancy test and platelet levels. I think they might also be checking your blood cell counts.

They do a CBC to check for anemia and any possible infection,a blood typing,antibody screen and cross match in case you need transfusion during or after surgery,coagulation tests to make sure that you don't have a potential excessive bleeding problem,as well as a pretty complete chemistry panel to check your electrolytes,blood sugar,liver function,kidney function,protein,cholesterol.....as well as possible hormone levels. Basically it's all to assess your overall general health in case there might be some other health issue that may need to be taken into account that could affect your treatment and recovery.
