PMS Symptoms after HYST

Re-scheduled 12/7 for Da Vinci, leaving ovaries hopefully.

Anyway, in my reading I haven't found this answer - do you still have the PMS symptoms after your hysterectomy? Back ache, bloating, swollen breasts, etc? I am assuming I would because my ovaries are staying.

Thank you for providing a place to discuss this surgery with those who have actually been there!

Re: PMS Symptoms after HYST

I was told you will more than likely have the same symptoms you did before your hyster. just no bleeding and cramping of the uterus. Some ladies say it is less severe than before though.
I was also told that the ovaries may go into shock for awhile because of the surgery and take awhile to start functioning again. It just depends on the individual I guess. So, I guess you will just have to wait and see Hope that helps.
I am wondering if mine will be less severe. I certainly hope so!
I have a bad time of it emotionally. At least we won't have cramps.

Hang in there!
Not long to go!

Re: PMS Symptoms after HYST

It is funny to realize it, but aunt flow would have appeared today if it wasn't for my LAVH. I had horrid PMS symptoms and cramped for days before my period would appear. I also suffered nasty headaches and sore breasts. I can happily say for me, that I have felt amazing all week and still feel fabulous today. I am not sure if it is for every woman and this is my first month post surgery, but I have high hopes that PMS is in the past!

Re: PMS Symptoms after HYST

Most women on the postop board still have pms symptoms, but something about not having horrifying pain and being stuck inthe house with clots for 3 days makes it so much better to deal with. I don't even really care about my pms anymore. ;-)

Re: PMS Symptoms after HYST

I kept my ovaries too. Headaches are worse, had the breast tenderness a little bit, but no cramping and no bleeding, which was the whole point of the uterus going bye bye. I am also taking black cohosh. I also don't have the depression, anxiety, tension, irritability and moodiness or homicidal tendencies that were my monthly gift from Auntie Flow.

Re: PMS Symptoms after HYST

Before my surgery, I had severe PMS for a week to 9 days...I would have anger, crying, headaches, swollen eyes, forgetfulness, insomnia, achy all over, exhaustion, BM changes, wanting to hurt myself, wanting to lock myself in a closet to avoid everyone, swelling of breasts and swelling of everything else...it was just horrible.

I went to a specialist and found my progesterone was non-existent. After I started taking natural bio-identical progesterone...it was like night and day...I can't tell you what a HUGE difference it made for me.

I was a new woman until about 2 days before my period I had my normal symptoms. I couldn’t stay awake, which apparently had to do with my something besides the lack of progesterone...then of course I went into my painful, heavy bleeding and fainting due to anemia...well with the hysterectomy...my anemia is getting better and of course the pain and bleeding is gone.

I haven’t started on the progesterone again yet since surgery. I thought I would wait and see how things go...so far it hasn't been bad, but I will have to wait a few more months to really get a clear picture of how I feel in relation to my "cycle." I did have some sadness, breast tenderness and a headache, but not what it would normally be without the progesterone pre-surgery.

My point is, after your surgery...if you still have PMS...there is help out there! All shall be well. I hope and pray all goes well for you!

Re: PMS Symptoms after HYST

Gosh! Not sure how I missed the replies - but thank you all!

Tomorrow is the day. I'm a little wired, running around trying to finish all these little projects so I can just relax for a while after surgery (wishful thinking - I am a single Mom of a 3 year old).

Thanks again - I can't wait to be able to live my life free of the curse!
