Re: Getting Scared

I was so scared at my pre-op consult. After, I called my BFF balling. The catheter was a breeze, kinda nice not having to get up to pee all the time. No retention either. For me, the Vaginal itching (prob due to dryness) has been intense. Vagisil has really helped. It is okay to be scared, but know you are not alone!

Re: Getting Scared

Nervous is so normal! I'm nervous too ~ taking lots of deep breaths.... Anyways, try not to worry about the catheter. I had a cyst removed and had a catheter, and it was really no bother ~ almost a relief. I barely knew I had it.... and so much easier than trying to get up. Take care.

Re: Getting Scared

I only had a catheter after I woke up from my cystoscope/bladder biopsy back in 1992. I also have been catheterized for DMSO installations every two to three months for my interstitial cystitis treatment back in the 90s. Had my own that I would bring to the doc's office for the installations. My urethra feels dry, and my bladder is sensitive since Mid Jan when my uterine cramping started getting bad. Just scared it will irritate it all worse.

Re: Getting Scared

I have a bladder condition that necessitated that I learn how to use a catheter myself for three times a day. (Thankfully I finished that up today!) These are the things that have helped with any discomfort and spasms caused by it. Extra lubricant when inserting the catheter helps reduce some irritation. That should be easy enough for them to do! If they ever insert one while you are awake- exhale while they are inserting it as it helps relax your urethra. If it's not contraindicated with your pain medication you can ask for an anti-spasmodic for your bladder for the first couple of days after the catheter (if it hurts to pee afterwards- it did me until I built up my "callous"- now I have no pain or spasms from using them). Though you may not need it- catheters don't bother a lot of people. You can also request that they use a non latex catheter. I've read that some people found when their catheter was switched to a non-latex one they didn't have any discomfort afterwards. I hope this helps and that you don't end up needing to take any of the advice. I'm a little worried myself about the catheter, but I know it will actually help my poor bladder so I'll take it for as long as I can get it!
