Nausea & Diarrhea 5+ Weeks Post Hysterectomy

It's likely that the surgical antibiotics have upset the normal balance of bacteria inside your intestinal tract, allowing a GI bug to take hold. When you see your doctor on Tuesday, be sure to mention it, so he can give you something to treat it; in addition to what he prescribes, I would recommend a probiotic supplement, or regular servings of live culture yogurt, to restore this balance. And phtreats, taking probiotics can also help to prevent a bladder infection, by restoring the normal balance of bacteria in there. Also, the diarrhea could leave you seriously dehydrated, especially of the nausea is preventing you from taking much in, so you need to work to maintain your fluid and electrolyte levels. You can make a rehydration cocktail by adding 1/2 tsp of honey and a pinch of salt to a glass of clear fruit juice, or just get some Gatorade or Pedialyte; sip it slowly to minimize stomach upset. Ginger is a well known remedy for nausea, so try some crystallized ginger, ginger tea, or flat ginger ale - the fizz can bother your stomach. Also try the BRAT diet - that's bananas, rice, applesauce and toast - and avoid hard to digest foods until things return to normal; that includes legumes, onions and garlic, cruciferous vegetables, cucumbers, melons, pears, and artificial sweeteners. Here's hoping you'll be over this soon, and back on the road to recovery!
