The extreme difference in all ourselves & docs
Another post made me think of is.
We are all individuals with different situations & docs but I am finding a very vast big difference in all our restrictions
I had a same day surgery with the DaVinci
My restrictions are: no sex 4 weeks
Since day of surgery no lifting over 37 lbs
Why is there such a vast difference?!
I had a complete (everything internally reproductive gone) because of extreme severe scar tissue on tubes and uterus, severe pain, periods lasting 2 weeks, risk of cancers.
In 2008 I had a cone biopsy. My paternal grandmother had female cancers and so did my paternal aunt so my risk still remained high after my cone

Re: The extreme difference in all ourselves & docs
I noticed the same thing and leaned towards the side of caution taking what my doc said but also restricting myself as much as possible, almost extreme restrictions. As a result of taking it really easy I had a great recovery and aside from still being tired feel great at just over 10 weeks.
This is major surgery no matter how its done and I would recommend that everyone take it as easy as possible. There are some who clearly can get back to things earlier than others, but it's still important to rest. A lot of issues are a result of pushing ourselves which as women we have a tendency to do naturally. Post op is an opportunity for us to relax and actually take care of ourselves for once instead of taking care of others.

Re: The extreme difference in all ourselves & docs
That is a very good question when I see instructions like yours which are so different than many others. The only thing I can think of is that our doctors do not follow us home to see how things really are. They are going by what patients tell him or her in the office and their examinations. They don't have a magic view into your tummies to see how our insides are healing.
Also different doctors use slightly different techniques while doing the surgery such as cauterizing versus stitching, attaching certain organs to ligaments versus not doing so, leaving part of the vaginal cuff open to drain versus stitching is completely shut to just list a few. I totally advocate following your doctor's instructions but at the same time, listen to your body. If it hurts, don't do it. If you are hurting later, lesson learned to let your body heal some more before trying that again. If you start bleeding after an activity, same again, let your body heal some more.
I hope you are healing well.

Re: The extreme difference in all ourselves & docs
Wow, 37 lbs just seems so high. There's differences, but I must say that that one is really far. Just an odd number really. Both pre op and post op drs and stories seem to be all over the spectrum.

Oh yes I wouldn't dare lift that much. I wouldn't lift my 15 & 18 pound babies. I was too afraid. I'm just starting to lift them more. Lifting them a week ago was uncomfy

Re: The extreme difference in all ourselves & docs
Some of us have had prolapse repairs that may restrict us more than others. Dr technique also plays a role as mentioned previously. Listen to your body! I received conflicting info on going up and down the stairs. Yesterday I went with the less restrictive advice and woke in pain and am in bed today (minor walking)- I'm going to go with more restrictive advice moving forward

Re: The extreme difference in all ourselves & docs
OMG I hate the stairs, but I have to go up & down. Just been taking them slow and sitting down as soon as I get to the top, out of breath, going down not too bad. Thought originally that the furniture upstairs in living room would be fine, but too uncomfortable. I like my recliner downstairs in family room. Definitely going to get bathroom put in down here.

Re: The extreme difference in all ourselves & docs
Ive noticed that too and found it interesting how different docs in different places can be. I've had no stair restrictions, I have no driving restrictions (although I have yet to try it), I'm not allowed to lift anything over 10 lbs for 4 weeks. My post op appt is 4 weeks from my surgery, but she said if I wanted, I could go back to work after 2 weeks. No baths for 4 weeks, no sex for 8 weeks. Neosporin in incisions after showering for 7 days. The hospital didn't agree with that, but told me to follow docs orders. Even the difference in my hospital and my dr were crazy, the hospital didn't want to release me because I wasn't producing enough urine for their standards. When they called my docs office, they had no idea what the hospital was talking about. My doc told me urinating and my bladder would feel odd for a few weeks, due to being 'out on it's own' and not supported/crushed by my very large uterus/fibroids anymore, and she was right. Some days it seems normal, others, I feel like i have to pee all the time, but yet barely go.
Anyone have any idea what the time frame is for the swelling to go down? I tried to put on jeans last night and nope, won't button over the swelling, even though I've lost 9 lbs...probably what my uterus weighed. I'm ready to be back to being me again. I'm not enjoying sitting around as much as I thought I would.

Re: The extreme difference in all ourselves & docs
I've noticed the huge differences. My appointment was at 2 weeks 5 days. He checked my cuff and I was released to resume all normal activities at my comfort level. This includes sex, as long as we took things easy. I will say though, I typically heal quite quick. We also discussed a lot of things, and I think he felt comfortable enough knowing I wouldn't overdue it, too.
