What prep do I need to do?
I've had no instructions about preparing for my op other than have a light dinner and then don't eat or drink until the op the following day-I'm having an abdominal. I've read people on this forum talking about a bowel prep and I'm afraid I don't know what that is? Also do I need to shave or do anything else to prepare the area? Sorry if these are daft questions!

Re: What prep do I need to do?
If your doctor didn't tell you to do a bowel prep, you don't need to. My dr didn't have me do one
either. I was told not to shave for 2 days before, they don't want any cuts to risk infection. Wash the morning of your surgery, it
will probably be a couple days before you do again. No lotions on your body afterwards. Also the dr should have given you a list of medications to avoid before your surgery and instructions on taking prescriptions before your surgery. Good luck!

Re: What prep do I need to do?
They will probably tell you more at your pre-op appointment. I was just told that I need to shower with one of those surgical soaps the night before and the morning of my surgery, nothing to eat or drink after midnight, and to not put on any makeup, lotion, or deodorant as they are all flammable!! No bowel prep for me either?

Re: What prep do I need to do?
Do exactly what your doctor or the hospital told you to do and don't do anything more than that. Every hospital has slightly different procedures, and you don't want to throw kinks into their usual routine.
"Bowel prep" means using a laxative or enema to clean out your bowels. I wasn't given any instructions about this. It turned out that at my hospital, the procedure was for the nurse to give me a Fleet enema as part of the prep procedure. The nurse also shaved me as part of that procedure.
The only instructions I was given about washing, lotions, etc. was that I was told not to wear cosmetics or anything scented, including scented deodorant. The hospitals up here have a very strong "no scents" policy. I wore unscented deodorant, which was apparently okay.
I had a shower and washed my hair the evening before and was glad I did, because I didn't get to have another shower until after I was released on Day 3! I did get sponge baths for my face, neck and upper body while in the hospital.

Re: What prep do I need to do?
Gosh docs are so different.
I asked about bowel prep in my presurgery clearance appt and was told no.. that she finds it dehydrates the patient. Just a light dinner and nothing to eat or drink after midnight. Im to be at the surgery center at 5:45 a.m. Ill probably stop eating and drinking earlier. The surgery center told me no makeup or jewelry and I can have deodorant on. They didnt ask me to wash with any special soap and said nothing about shaving.

Re: What prep do I need to do?
Only follow your Drs instructions. I had no bowel prep, but was handed 2 fleet enema's and sent to the bathroom when I got to the hosp for surgery. I had went before I got there, so...it was more of a formality for me. I was told not to eat solids after midnight, but could drink up until 30 before arrival time. Also, no shaving...they do that for you after you are out most of the time. I was also given special soap to use on my tummy the night before and the morning of. Thats all the prep I had. Good Luck!

Re: What prep do I need to do?
Wow, not only do I have to do a bowel prep, but my entire day before needs to be a clear liquid diet only! I am scheduled for surgery at 1:30 in the afternoon and do not go to the hospital until 11:30. Nothing after midnight. I will be one hungry dehydrated puppy and I will be having cream in my coffee the morning before.

Re: What prep do I need to do?
Hi
I had a TAH and had no bowel prep I asked about it at my pre op with the dr he said no it was not necessary for him. No food or drink after midnight and my surgery wasn't until 2pm. I found not having food was no problem but I was thirsty. I was given a medical body wash by the hospital at my pre op testing appointment. Was instructed to use half the bottle the night before and half the morning off. I also had instructions not to shave and no lotions, deodorant or perfumes. I recommend washing your hair the day of or night before. One less thing to worry about afterwards. The nurses helped me take a shower the afternoon after my surgery. I think every doc and every hospital have their routines so check with both on what you should do.
Good luck.
