How common is this?
Hi, I had a TAH/BSO on July 27th and came home from the castle on the 29th. While cutting away all the adhesions the surgeon nicked my bladder. So, home I come with a catheter and leg bag to wear for 3 weeks while my bladder heals. I ended up back in the ER on the 4th night due to bladder spasms and infection. I was just wondering if it is pretty common to have your bladder nicked and what can you all suggest to keep my mind off this catheter and leg bag. Thanks for listening.

How common is this?
Dear sew4fun,
I'm so so sorry that happened to you! My surgeon told me that bladder nicks can sometimes happen and he told me that was why I had to do a bladder prep the day before "just in case" I did get my bladder nicked (I was lucky tho). Apparently, it is not uncommon. I am sure there are some sisters who experienced this and can give you their stories/advice. I just wanted to say hang in there and many s!

How common is this?
Hugs to my sisters!!! I, too, suffered a "nicked" bladder and had to come home with a Foley catheter and, of course, the collection bag. I was really in pain- we live 2 hours from our doctor and hospital, so travelling for rechecks was just horribly painful. My DH got so stressed trying to dodge the bigger chuckholes in the roads!!! These things sometimes happen even with the best of surgeons. At least the surgeon recognized the problem and is treating you. Please be very careful in catheter care: you should wear gloves when handling your catheter and/or emptying your bag and be sure to wash your hands well before and after- you do not want a urinary tract infection on top of everything else! Wash carefully but throughly around the meatus (place where the catheter goes into you), and keep tension off the catheter. I found the stretch panties from the hospital to be most comfortable for holding everything in place without tension. Dont let your bag get too full Use clean bags everyday- new are best- and I would push the hospital/your DR to supply you with such- otherwise, clean your bag daily as instructed by your health care staff. Be careful, dont even think about moving forward with your active recovery until that thingy is removed!!! I dont even count my first post-op week when I had the Foley as part of my recovery because that was such a painful, traumatic, exhausting ordeal. But the time will come to an end and you will move on and recover! Be patient and strong- and here's another hug - you deserve it!!!!

How common is this?
Hi Sew 4 Fun
I also had my bladder nicked in 2 places and had a cath for 1 week after surgery. From reading this site, it's becoming clear that it does happen more than we thought, or even expected.
I ended up needing to use a barrier cream (sorbolene) around the area where the cath was inserted because my body/skin became really inflamed. Speak to your doc (or pharmacist) about what you can use if you encounter such probs - better to know in advance....
I know it's an awful situ, so here is the way I amuse myself when I look back at that time.......I've become very unaccepting when it comes to men peeing on the toilet seat - afterall, if I can release the valve on a cath/bag, and shoot the fluid into the toilet bowl without hitting the toilet seat or floor, all the while standing on one leg (in order to lift the bag high enough) with one arm supporting myself on the wall and a 12" wound across my tummy......then there is no excuse for men using two hands, and standing on two legs...!!!
Ok, do empty the bag regularly..........and I washed mine every morning whilst I was in the shower - was really simple that way.
Take care
Robyn

How common is this?
Hey, this happened to me too! Glad to know I wasn't the only one. I had the catheter for 10 days and lots of antibiotics to prevent infection (which then caused a massive yeast infection, but that's another story....). My dr. was so apologetic--scared my husband to death because he insisted on talking to him post-op in a conference room rather than the waiting room.
I agree with RobynD--I felt like a guy going to the bathroom to empty the bag! No reason for any dribbles from the men any more....
It's yucky but this too shall pass. I sort of considered it a reason not to be up and around too much, and it made having to sit and rest a little easier. Try wearing loose dresses and once any drainage stops, skip the panties unless they're huge granny panties..
hang in there..........

Hey, big S to each & every 1 of you....
I just wanted to put in my two cents worth . I do believe I recall my doctor, a UroGYN, saying that the bladder's proximity to the uterus causes it to be so often "nicked" that he does a cystoscopy with all of his hysterectomies just to make sure that nothing is wrong with the bladder before he 'leaves' the area. It was comforting to know that.
There have been many ladies over on the forum Bladder Matters who have dealt with catheters quite often. If you need some extra help and advice, please pop on over there and check it out....

My doctor warned me that is was possible that it could happen. I was lucky but three weeks post op my bladder is causing the most pain. Nothing compared to what you are going thru. I will be thinking of you
