2 completely different opinions

I have an enlarged uterus and numerous fibroids. I've known this for awhile but the GYN I was seeing steered clear of hysterectomy until I started having more symptoms. I have low back pain all the time, severe constipation, overall not feeling "well", and bloating. I did have an uterine ablation 3 years ago but I still have periods. My periods are not as heavy but I still bleed and have cramping. My family doctor suggested I get a second opinion. This GYN suggests removing my uterus. She said I was equivalent to 20 weeks pregnant and the largest fibroid is 7 cm. She said it "could" be contributing to the constipation and back pain. I called my original GYN and told him what I did and he is still reserved on having the surgery. He doesn't believe in doing it unless it's life threatening. I don't understand why I'm getting 2 totally different opinions. My symptoms don't seem huge but I'm afraid I'm just immune to them since I've been dealing with it for so long. Won't the uterus just continue to grow and eventually have to come out anyway? Need help deciding what to do!!!! Desperate!

Re: 2 completely different opinions

I would say a GYN who only would do a hyst if fibroid are "life threatening" has a view more extreme than most. Did he discuss options such as UAE or myomectomy? Hysterectomy is not the only treatment available. I'd consider a 3rd opinion and possiby a consult with an IR (interventional radiology)Dr if UAE interests you. I hope you get the info you need to make a decision right for you.

Re: 2 completely different opinions

He did not offer alternatives. He has mentioned before that he thinks I'll go into menopause and then not have to worry about it. But I'm not sure exactly what that means. Does everything just "go away" when you hit menopause???
