Re: dry eyes i week after surgery

My eyes and mouth seemed to dry out overnight after my surgery. The immediate affects were probably due to the anti nausea meds they gave me during surgery. A few days later, I noticed my skin and hair drying out too. My eyes were so u comfortable that I started using wetting drops several times a day. I just started HRT, but I think it is helping some. My legs aren't as itchy and my eyes don't feel so dry. Fish oil supplements may help al if you don't want to take HRT.

Re: dry eyes i week after surgery

Some of us, especially those of us who lose both ovaries, get dry eyes. And for some of us they stay drier. I have to have drops by my bedside because my eyelids stick shut in the mornings such that it is painful to open my eyes all they way without Systane (my preferred drop). I am considering looking into punctal plugs, tiny plugs put in the tear ducts that prevent the liquid from draining from the eye. Most days I carry natural tears for use throughout the day. Some seem to think it's and estrogen thing. I had it before my surgery, but it worsened after even with estrogen replacement. Sometimes proper HRT is enough.

HRT is a confusing subject. That why we have an entire forum dedicated to it. For the first couple months post-op your body will be depleting its stores of estrogen so you are likely to be symptomatic from fluctuations even if you are taking HRT now. Once your body settles down, you can start working on tweaking your estrogen levels to make sure you are getting the right amount. For now the goal is just to minimize hot flashes and to keep you off the emotional a bit.
