exercise after 3 mos. post-op?
I had a full hysterectomy (both ovaries removed) on 9/30/10, and would like to know if anyone considers this too soon for exercising, example, floor exercises. I've been doing some walking, but my main concern is not to aggravate any of my inside healing. Each week I am feeling better, but I am still a little tender inside and still will not lift anything heavier than 10 pds. Thank you.

Re: exercise after 3 mos. post-op?
I am 2 months post op from a LSH and have been doing some walking and some yoga. I think you will just have to be careful and know your limits if you feel strained. I think some excercise is encouraged at this point. I actually feel alot better the days I do excercise,

Re: exercise after 3 mos. post-op?
Was it an abdominal hysterectomy or one of the less invasive methods? I had LAVH and I was back to full activity at four weeks post-op...BUT I was also active right up until the day of my surgery. Is this a case of getting back into an exercise routine, or starting one for the first time?

Re: exercise after 3 mos. post-op?
It was abdominal surgery, and yes, it is the first of exercises for me. Just concerned with the bending and stretching. I certainly do not want to go back to the pain I was feeling the first few weeks. Thank you.

Re: exercise after 3 mos. post-op?
Exercise doesn't have to involve bending and stretching if that concerns you. Perhaps the best approach is to begin with easy aerobic exercise incorporating gentle movements within your range of motion. You could continue walking but turn it into a regular program by doing it daily and keeping track of the time and distance walked and the perceived effort. If you feel exhausted at the end of your day's walk, you probably need to reduce the amount of time you're walking; if you feel like you're really straining during your walk, you probably need to decrease the intensity. If, on the other hand, you finish the day's walk and it's easy as pie, the next day you might try to walk for five minutes longer or pick up the pace slightly. Also, consistency works wonders. Walking seven days a week for half an hour each day will do much more for you than walking for three and a half hours on one day and sitting around the rest of the week. Don't worry if you're not doing much or you're not walking very far or fast now, or if you can't ramp it up very fast. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single small step.

Re: exercise after 3 mos. post-op?
Thank you so much for your advice. I work 5 days a week at a desk job, and try to walk around as much as possible, but I noticed like going to the mall walking around for about an hour I am exhausted and lower back really hurts. This hyster stuff really sucks, lol.

So, if you're exhausted and your lower back really hurts, you're probably doing more than you should at this point. Start at a less ambitious point and work for modest but consistent improvements. You'll go further than people who declare big huge ambitious New-Year-resolution workout goals and quit in a few weeks when they aren't immediately all fit and cut.

Re: exercise after 3 mos. post-op?
I was back to the gym a month post op and was already walking 5 days a week but I was as active before surgery... but I am still not full strength and stamina... I am still weaker than I was and I was a runner before and now I can only run max about 2 KM. I am taking it slow and if I get tired I stop.
