Almost 4 weeks post hysterectomy - migraines and nausea

Hello everyone! I have been following this wonderful blog. I have been comforted when finding that some of you had the same symptoms I am experiencing. I'm coming up four weeks since my surgery. I had a total vaginal hysterectomy, still have both of my ovaries. I am still dealing with a what I believe to be a migraines and nausea. These symptoms bring on anxiety. The thing I find weird is that one day I seem to feel normal and then the next day I'm back to feeling not so good. Is this normal? I have always had issues with hormone imbalance even before the surgery . I seen my doc on Monday. My blood work showed I was anemic. Started a raw food iron supplement.
Thank you

Re: Almost 4weeks post op

Even having retained your ovaries, they might not be up to speed yet. Surgery can compromise the blood supply until a new source is established, or just the trauma of surgery itself can make our ovaries go "off line" for a few weeks. I'd bring this up to your doctor at your appointment on Monday, perhaps something can be prescribed temporarily until you're back up to speed.

Caution on the iron supplements - women in menopause don't need as much, and too much iron long term can cause organ damage. Remember since we're no longer menstruating, we're not going to lose iron once a month any more. I'd run any supplements you're taking by your doctor as well to be sure that you're taking what's right for you.

Almost 4 weeks post hysterectomy - migraines and nausea

While you're waiting to see your doctor on Monday, try supplementing your diet with magnesium, which apparently works well for hormonal headaches; food sources include leafy greens, whole grains, nuts and seeds, and dark chocolate. Ginger also reputedly works well for this, as it is a potent anti-inflammatory, and can also help to settle your stomach; you can cook it into your meals, or have some crystallized ginger, ginger tea, or ginger ale. Also, if you're okay with eating soy, then 1-2 daily servings of tofu, edamame, or soy milk can help with hormonal balance until your ovaries resume normal functioning. As for the anemia, check with your doctor as to which type you have; it can also be caused by a Vitamin B12 deficiency, which can become increasingly common as we grow older. Best wishes for your continued recovery!

Re: Almost 4 weeks post hysterectomy - migraines and nausea

Thanks for posting this. I've been suffering from one migraine a week since my surgery and for some reason I have also developed ringing in the ears. My Dr. prescribed meds for my migraine but I think I'll press them to do a check on my hormones too.

Re: Almost 4 weeks post hysterectomy - migraines and nausea

Thank you ladies for your responses. I am happy to say that my headaches have gotten better as well as the nausea. I used quite a few things that seemed to help. I have been taking a fish oil with evening primrose supplement, I used a magnesium with calcium drink before bed with a vitamin D supplement ( Im low on D) I started melatonin because I was having trouble sleeping at night which made my headaches & nausea worse during the day,
I drank lots of tea (peppermint, lemon ginger, chamomile) and a heating pad on my neck seemed to help alot.
I have an appointment on the 19th to see a naturopathic doc to have hormones tested. I unfortunately have had other issues as well (anxiety, depression, irritability) My symptoms do seem like they are improving as the days go on but I still do not feel 100 %
I have been walking 20 -30 min a day as well
I am a woman of faith & have been praying to the Lord for comfort and peace. I feel His presence & know He is with me

God Bless you ladies!
