Hysterectomy in less than 2 weeks (worried)

My doctor has recommended a hysterectomy (removal of cervix and uterus). I have a polyp on my uterus and prolapsed cervix. Have you heard of anyone having a hysterectomy for these reasons. The polyps cause heavy bleeding and clotting. I think I am ready. I am 31 years old and another doctor mentioned your ovaries can quit working after a hysterectomy. Has this happened to anyone? I have the surgery in less than two weeks. Please give me some advice!!!!!

Thanks,

Aggie4

Hysterectomy in less than 2 weeks (worried)

Hi Aggie4

Welcome to Hystersisters! I'm sorry you are facing surgery but you have found a great place to gather information and fulfill your support needs!

I didn't have my hysterectomy for the same reasons as you, but I can relate to the heavy bleeding and clotting. I did keep my ovaries and fortunately, they are working. Sometimes ovaries can stop working after a hysterectomy, but I was willing to take the chance that they would work. My doctor and I decided that if my ovaries were healthy, he would leave them. If they were diseased they would come out. It was very important to me that I keep them if possible. I don't have ovarian cancer in my family so that was also a deciding factor for me. I'm glad I was able to keep them.

I wish you the best with your decision and upcoming surgery!

Best wishes!

Hi Aggie,

I agree with Deb. I was 46 when I had my LSH last year and I wanted to keep my ovaries and go through natural menopause, if I was a candidate.

A consideration to keep your ovaries may be your age. With surgical menopause, many ladies opt to go on HRT or an alternative method after their hyst.

Here is a H.S. ovary forum that was started last month. Very informative. Please check it out.

Here is a polyps link I also found:
