Not sure if time for surgery

This has been a tough year for me. Was told in Nov 2010 that I needed a hysterectomy for fast growing fibroids. Second opinion specialist said to wait since they were still small and follow-up with ultrasounds. November 2011 ultrasound showed thick uterine wall (16mm) so had hysteroscopy and D&C done on recommendation of both gynecologists. Diagnosed with endometrial hyperplasia with simple cells without atypia. End of Dec started on 3 month regimen of Provera with an endometrial biopsy scheduled for Mar 28. Was fine until recently when I had a full period Feb 11 that lasted 8 days and just started another Feb 24. Went to gyn who recommended another ultrasound which is now showing increased size of one of 3 fibroids and a complex lesion (possibly hemorrhagic) on one ovary. I am so "done" with all of this and not sure what to do at this point. I know a hysterectomy is major surgery with its own risks but I don't know if I can go through much more of this. I am 54 yrs old and do not plan on having more children. Sound familiar to anyone? Any suggestions or advice? Thanks for listening!

Re: Not sure if time for surgery

It sounds like you feel that your problems are affecting you quality of life. Yes, a hyst is a major surgery but most people recover from it in a reasonable time and feel so much better.

For me, I was tired of feeling awful all the time, dealing with massive bleeding etc. So I went ahead and did it and feel much better. Due to other health issues I think my healing has been a little slower than average but I still don't regret it.

I would ask my dr. what type of surgery is being recommended and then search the boards and ask questions here. I found that the fear of surgery was much worse than actually having it. Good Luck.

Gittle

I am sorry to hear that you are ezperiencing issues.

The good newz is that simple hyperplasia without atypia can reverse on its own and it has a a <2% risk of morphing into cancer.

Here's a study that talks about some of the items you mentioned: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2680496/

You should dis uss quality of life issues with your Dr, feom there you can learn as much as possible to make an informed decision.

There isn't anyway to put back things once they are removed so you will need ro make sure that you won't have any regrets if you chose the surgical route.

Re: Not sure if time for surgery

Gittle,

Of course a hysterectomy is a big surgery, and whether or not to have one is a decision only you can make. If you are waffling, maybe get a second opinion from another doctor. It is scary to put trust about your health in only one person.

I can only speak from my own experience and tell you that, since my hysty, my life is so much easier. Maybe the question you should ask yourself is, is setting aside a month or two of my life worthwhile if it could make the rest of my life easier?

Whatever you decide, I wish you deep peace, fast healing and a joyful life without pain.
