Ibuprofen masking fever?

I'm 1 week post-op and My temp is currently 100.0. I've been taking my 800mg ibuprofen pretty consistently for the aches and pains, stopped my Percocet last night. I last took the ibuprofen at 11 this morning and its now almost 5 pm here. I'm thinking of letting it wear off completely to see what my true temp is. Hospital discharge said 100.4 or above to call dr. I'm worried the meds have been masking a fever!

Just great. DH was supposed to return to work tomorrow. Praying I don't have an infection :'(

Liz

Re: Ibuprofen masking fever?

Hi Liz, It is possible that you are masking a fever. At 2 weeks post op I had a fever and I did not know it because of the meds. If you suspect that you are running a fever skip the next dose and see what happens with your temperature and well being. If you are feeling well, no heavy bleeding and no "new" or intensified pains chances are it may not be a fever. However, to be on the safe side if you are still on the cusp of running one you should call the doctor and let them know you can get it to break.

Good luck with your continued recovery. I'm hoping it's not any infection. ((HUGS))

That happened to me I had been feeling warm and just not well as my ibuprofen would wear off at first I thought it was hot flashes then I would take the dose and I would be fine so I decided to skip the next dose my temp went up to 102.7 so I called the dr had a uti took antibiotics no more fever

Re: Ibuprofen masking fever?

Same thing happened to me too. I called the nurses line and was told to go to Emergency (which is my worst nightmare because there are 'sick' people there)-not a good place to be when your Immune system is low anyways due to surgery. I was put on Antibiotics too because there was an infection starting. It is is good thing I went, but I am wondering why they don't give you a prescription to take home 'just in case'. It would be easier than having to go back to Emergency, or the clinic when you don't feel well in the first place and are not allowed to drive. I hope you feel better now.

Re: Ibuprofen masking fever?

Ladies, I got smart.. I had made 2 trips to the ER before I realized that the key is to have your doctor call the hospital ER and advise them that you are coming in. On my 3rd visit to the ER, I walked right in past the waiting crowd! They even had a wheelchair waiting for me at triage/check in. Might be worth asking your doc when you call and they refer you to go to the ER. That's the least they can do since you are in recovery and really shouldn't be sitting amoungst the sick general population.

Oh my, 3 trips to Emergency?! That is horrible. I hope you are over that hurdle now. Good advise though-thanks!

Re: Ibuprofen masking fever?

Yea it's been quite the adventure. On my third visit I was admitted for 4 days on IV antibiotics. I am turning the corner now though. Proof that it does get better.
