Re-Introducing Food, Post-Op 6 Days
Hi everyone!
It's day six after my surgery, and I'm at home recouperating. I think I might have messed up with my food choices. I've been mostly drinking fluids and eating soft foods like Jello & applesauce. Today my DH gave me a salad with romaine lettuce & tomatoes. My older sister called while I was eating and mentioned that it might be too soon to have a salad. The thing is my doctor didn't give me any guidelines on when to introduce various foods.
So, when did you start introducing more solid foods to YOUR diet?

While I was at the castle they gave me two meals and no restrictions at all. Just be careful of gas producers...

Re: Re-Introducing Food, Post-Op 6 Days
I ate salad for dinner after my surgery. I think the more fiber the better. My dr said no processed foods, no sugar and about 1400 calories a day.

Re: Re-Introducing Food, Post-Op 6 Days
I think you are fine. I have the issue of not being able to eat nothing but what I have a craving for. Anything else I just can't eat. So everyday dinner is just up in the air while I wait for my body to "want" something. Fluids are great so keep those up. And eat what you like unless you're having problems with gas or something you may want to steer away from gassy foods. My Dr didn't give me any guidelines either.

Re: Re-Introducing Food, Post-Op 6 Days
Unfortunately, I had ileus post-op, But after, a soft diet, I was in hospital for 7 days. I had trouble with acid reflux for while, but now I can eat anything I want, I lost 26 lbs! But I was told to stay away from gassy foods.

How long did your acid reflux last? I'm still having that issue at weeks.

Re: Re-Introducing Food, Post-Op 6 Days
I thought about putting this on a separate post but decided to put it here...I did some "research" on foods that were the least gassy on line and came up with the following list:
cottage cheese, yogurt, peanut butter, canned fruits but not the juice, grapes, white breads, pasta with light sauce - tomatoes, mashed potatoes, white rice, non fried eggs, lean meats, squash, green beans
avoid: beans, peas, cabbage, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, bananas, raisins, whole wheat breads, salads (although lettuce by itself seems to be ok -probably the dressings) and pop - especially diet (or soda depending on what where you live...haha)...oh, and fried or processed foods.
I hope this helps you as it did me when I was having TERRIBLE issues with gas.
Lainey - It's been weird, I've had awful heartburn/acid reflux before my surgery but haven't for the past 4 weeks (post surgery). Last night I felt a little but it went away. I imagine it's because I had been eating better due to the gas issue. But now that I'm feeling better my bad eating habits are coming back. I'm just waiting for the heartburn to return full time. I had pizza Saturday night and it tasted wonderful...now I'm waiting for the Mexican. But I haven't gotten that brave yet.

Re: Re-Introducing Food, Post-Op 6 Days
Unfortunately there is no cure for acid reflux, it's here to stay , but it is controllable. I take nexium 40mg. a day, eat smaller meals more frequently, if you want to eat or drink something acidic, such as orange juice, tomato juice etc, make sure you eat a piece of toast or cracker, or something to absorb the acid in you stomach, never drink something acidic on an empty stomach. Also with me, I can't eat anything sweet first thing in morning, before I eat a piece of toast or some crackers. I also found out gum helps, any flavor.

Re: Re-Introducing Food, Post-Op 6 Days
Trico80,
I have always had problems with acid reflux whenever I was nervous or anxiouse about something. My girlfriend got married and I had acid reflux for a week. I think my throat got scratched during surgery because after words I couldn't breathe through my mouth without making noises in my throat like it was complete constricted so they put oxygen on me. I'm hoping this will go away soon.
On the eating front, all I want is mashed potatoes, soup, or refried beans. Weird huh?! Thanks for the info!

Another weird side effect from surgery, I can no longer chew gum. It produces way too much saliva and starts to irritate my throat from all the swallowing. arghh!
