Am I Making The Right Choice
Hi everyone i'am new to this board but i do hope that i can find some answers and a lot of support here.
About 3 weeks ago i went back to see my obgyn. (in July last year he finally removed my fellopian tubes after 4 years of chronic pain) the pain that i have been living with for over 4 years has gotten worse.(removing my tuves did not relieve any of the pain)
He said that i could go in an have another altrasound or just scheldule a hysterectomy. and since i have been in chronic pain for over 4 years he seemed to want to go with setting up a hysterectomy. It would be great to get just a little relief from this pain but when i asked him if a hysterectomy would give me relief he said he can't be sure, but it might help.
He scheldued me for a pre-op in a few weeks. i also have to see a surgon to for a pre-op so when he is doing the hysterectomy they can fix my bladder. (i have leakage when i cough or sneeze)
I have been having a feeling like there is something stuck in my throat, so i had a barium swallow done to find out if there was anything wrong the only thing they saw was that my throid is longer on one side then the other so my family doctor set an appointment up for me with a gasterolist in the beginning of May
Since they removed my tubes it seems like everytime they take exrays something else shows up.
I know that i do have scar tissue that was formed when i had my appendics out and i do know that they removed some of it when they took my tubes. Is it true that scar tissue does grow back but it can grow back in other places?
Right now i have so many questions, i have been reading alot about hysterectomies to make sure i'am doing the right thing but the more i read the more confused i get. The pain that i'am having could be from FIBROIDS, ANAL FISSURE, or CYSTOCELE (fallen bladder). Everything that i have read for alot of these problems ends up with surgrey. so letting my doctor preform a hysterectomy seems like the thing to do but will they take care of any of these problems if they see that any of them is causing the problem or will he just preform the hysterectomy and if i still have pain will they have to operate one more time? Will scar tissue grow in any one of these places after they have opened me up? Will a hysterectomy cause me more problems with depression?I just don't know what to do, when i talked to my Mother she told me to have a hysterectomy as soon as i can but what if it doesn't help?
IF YOU CAN GIVE ME ANY ADVISE IT WOULD BE HELPFULL i just don't know what to do right now

Am I Making The Right Choice
Hi, Lbgini,
I'm sorry you're having a problem with abdominal pain. I'm glad you found Hystersisters, because the ladies here are caring and supportive.
I can't tell you whether you should have a hysterectomy, because that's a choice only you can make, with the advise of your physicians.
Hysterectomy is major surgery. Initial recovery after a hyst requires six to eight weeks of resting and healing. Complete recovery takes six months to a year. Hysterectomy is forever. Some women experience complications.
I'd advise any woman who's considering a hsyt to get at least two medical opinions, before making a decision. It doesn't sound like your doctor knows the cause of your pain, and that concerns me. It seems to me that it would be hard to know whether a hyst would cure you, without knowing why you're in pain. Please think about getting at least one more medical opinion, before you decide about this surgery. It's an important decision, and if getting other opinions means waiting, it may be worth your wait.
Internal scar tissue, also known as adhesions, can grow back after a hyst, and some women have problems with their adhesions. Here's a link to The Road Less Traveled forum, where women who experience medical problems after the initial recovery period discuss their situations:

I hope this gives you some things to think about. Good luck with your decision, and please let us know if we can provide more information for you.
Best wishes,
Helen

Am I Making The Right Choice
Lbgini,
I'm sorry that you are in so much pain. Your doctor mentioned that you could have another ultrasound. I believe that I would definitely have another ultrasound AND seek out two more doctors to give you opinions.
I would get test results and copies of films from the hospital and take them with me when I go get the 2nd and 3rd opinion. Copies of films and test results are obtained through medical records at the hospital where you had the tests performed.
After having the 2nd and 3rd opinion is when I would make my final decision as to whether or not a hysterectomy is the best solution.
Hysterectomy option will always be there but I would want to exhaust all options by getting a 2nd and 3rd opinion since your original doctor can not say for sure whether having the hysterectomy will take care of your problems and leave you pain free. Hysterectomy is MAJOR and can not be reversed. Maybe your 2nd and 3rd opinion doctor will lead you to a urologist who can really make a difference.
You situation is complex and I'm sorry that you are having to go through all of this. Please keep us informed as to how things proceed. We want the very best for YOU!

Am I Making The Right Choice
Hi Lbgini,
I would for sure get 2nd and 3rd opinions and research on your own until you are comfortable with a decision either way.
I agree with Helen something is not right about your doc wanting to go ahead with the hsyt not knowing what exactly the problem is. I would have every test there is done and get a diagnosis from at least 2 other doctors.

Am I Making The Right Choice
Welcome to Hystersisters!
I would have some questions for that dr. Like, why do a hyst if you don't know what's causing the pain? If nothing's wrong with the uterus, why take it out? Would the dr not want to do a laparoscopy first to see he can tell what's causing trouble? If adhesions are found at that time, it may be possible to remove them at that time. Some things just don't show up on an ultrasound but most fibroids do.
Maybe your dr has found something upon examination, along with other symptoms or your history that you haven't mentioned here, that indicates having a hyst. But just based on what you've told us, I'd be skeptical about undergoing a major surgery without further indications that one was needed. Is your insurance willing to pay just based on this?
Yes, adhesions (scar tissue) can come back and they can cause lots of pain. I had some that were attached to my intestines and had them removed laparoscopically about 5 years ago, and so far, they haven't returned. But even if they did & I had to have them removed again, it'd be worth the 5 years to me that I've spent without the pain they caused.
Like the others said, this a decision we can't make for you, but I agree that it's a good idea to get a second opinion first. Or at least more answers from this dr.
Good luck in whatever you decide. Keep us posted.
