Re: 6 weeks, not ready to go back to work- HELP!

Be honest & up front with your doctor. If your not physically ready, you can do more damage by pushing yourself!!!! Talk with your doctor & don't allow them to talk AT you, but with you. Best of wishes for you!!!

Re: 6 weeks, not ready to go back to work- HELP!

My 6 week appt is tomorrow, I am also not ready to go back. The other day it hurt to pick up the strainer that had potatoes in it from my sink to a bowl. I am a paramedic and frequently have to lift large patients. When I asked the nurse at my dr's office how is it that we don't lift more than 5 lbs for 6 weeks and then at 6 weeks day 1 we can lift 150. She said, I can't, that I can lift 20-30 and slowly go up from there. You don't want to end up with a hernia or other problems. Tell the dr that you don't feel ready. Perhaps you can do part time or a light duty.

Good Luck,

Tracy

Re: 6 weeks, not ready to go back to work- HELP!

Your doctor may understand and extend your leave to 8 weeks. This is standard (6-8 weeks).
After that, it will be a return to work with limited duties.
My return to work paper said no lifting more than 5-10 pounds.

If that is so, if you are a paramedic, maybe you can do something else at work besides lift patients.

Re: 6 weeks, not ready to go back to work- HELP!

I had surgery the same date as you!

I can tell you, I don't think I am quite ready to go back either...I am thinking another week. I had some pretty extensive damage from endo and even tho my healing has been steady, it has also been SLOW!

I agree you need to talk TO your doctor. You know your body better than anyone! I have a pretty stressful job I am going back to and I was on a 10 hour shift...that will NOT be happening...when I go back, it will be 8 hour days only!

Let us know how your appmt goes! My followup is Thursday!

Re: 6 weeks, not ready to go back to work- HELP!

My surgery was csection, 5lbs of uterus & 10 fibroids. I think I will ask her to extend my leave 2 more weeks, then return with 1/2 days.

Re: 6 weeks, not ready to go back to work- HELP!

Hi, my doctor told me 8 weeks recovery without even finding out what kind of job I do and when I told him I work at a daycare he said when I go back absolutely no lifting children for quite a while. We have hundreds of internal stitches and you seriously risk tearing something and needing another surgery, sounds like a paramedic you will be lifting on a daily basis and sounds like you will probably end up needing another surgery, no way would I risk my health I would just wait to go back, there are so many complications that can arise from one surgery I would not want another one. If something goes wrong it can change your life forever, it is just not worth it. I read it takes up to one year for all stitches to heal. I am not saying I will wait a year to lift a child but I will let my doctor and my body guide me to when I will be ready, Think long and hard about what you are doing or you may regret it for the rest of your life. I have heard stories, not going to share, or would freak too many people out but you should come first not your job. Take care

Re: 6 weeks, not ready to go back to work- HELP!

I had my 6 week post op visit this morning, SHe said I still have alot of granulation and the cuff still has a clear incision line. I have to go back in 2 weeks to have it checked, until then, no lifting. I was cleared to do light duty which translates into helping with paperwork in our billing office. I think it will be about another month before I am back on the ambulance lifting patients.
