anemia and hair falling out

i was diagnosed anemic a couple of months ago and have been taking iron for almost two months. my last blood test showed that my iron had gone up and was almost normal (12.2 i think). but my hair is still falling out. i had a lot of hair to begin with so circumstances are not dire yet but....when will it stop? should i be concerned?

Re: anemia and hair falling out

dragoncita,

Sorry you're having problems with your hair falling out, I had the same trouble pre-op when I was anemic. After I got some blood (two units) it stopped. It took several months but it did finally improve. Everyone is different but there is hope!

Take good care of yourself to give your body a chance to get back to normal.

Re: anemia and hair falling out

Hair loss can be due to several factors. Stress is a big one - both mental and physical. I have past experience with this. I suspect that stress will be reduced post surgery and the hair loss will slow.

Re: anemia and hair falling out

In 2009 when my hemoglobin level dropped to 5.3 my hair started thinning. I take Nature's Bounty Iron and took 4 times the daily amount and after about a month my hair stopped shedding and is now back to normal. Maybe you should consult with a dermatologist if you're still losing hair because hair loss can also be caused by thyroid problems.
