Nausea one week post-op..
Hi Sisters.. I am one week post-op, TAH (kept both ovaries) was on March 27th. My doctor said the hysterectomy was "textbook," and the only issue she ran into was my bladder being covered in scar tissue and pushed up to the top of of my uterus (I believe it's supposed to sit below/behind uterus). So she successfully removed the scar tissue and put it back where it belongs.
While in the hospital, I had horrible nausea and sweats. None of this was a shock, as I do not tolerate general anesthesia very well, and the nurses said the sweats were from the shock of the surgery.
Now, one week later.. still nauseous (not throwing up), still breaking out in a sweat a couple times a day. Yesterday was probably the best day thus far, and today is not so good again. Hard to eat/drink. Bowel movements and peeing are all normal.. Not a lot of swelling..
Anyone else dealing with the nausea and/or sweats? Anything in particular that helps?

Re: Nausea one week post-op..
I wonder if it could be your pain meds causing the nausea. Have you discussed ths with our doctor? You need to eat to keep your strength up.

Re: Nausea one week post-op..
Today is a better day.. Eating little bits much more often, and drinking more. I was having a hard time with plain water, so I'm having very watered down cranberry juice, and that is working well.
I think I got too far behind the pain yesterday, so while I've still cut back some on the meds, I managed to get ahead of the pain.

I havent had this but was talking to a coworker who had the same procedure you have. Despite still having her ovaries, she is now on hormone replacements to help. She had the same type of problems after surgery that you describe

Thanks, both of you. I keep telling myself, "it's only been a week," but if I have another day like yesterday, I will be calling the doctor.

Hi Deanna. I found this thread looking up the exact problem you were having. How are you doing now? I'm at one week today and could have written your post myself.

Re: Nausea one week post-op..
Bluebell5 - It will get better! I promise! The day I wrote that post was the absolute worst, and I think it was the combination of a MAJOR ABDOMINAL SURGERY and getting behind on my meds. On top of the nausea, I was blessed with extreme dizziness, which I am still working through - though it is slowly improving. Here is how I've progressed:
At one week, I was very much attached to the recliner. More time in it than out. Nauseous, hot flashes, itchy rash on my back and hips, very sore back.
At two weeks, I was still very much attached to the recliner, but did our stairs for the first time and stepped outside (it was sunny) for a very short time. That night my husband took me for a drive in the car. Still had a little bit of rash, very sore back.
At almost three weeks, my husband took me for another drive to Starbucks (drive-thru) and I drank about four sips of my mocha - it made me nauseous. I went outside to our little greenhouse and watered my plants (the watering can was almost empty, mind you, so it wasn't more than 2-3 pounds). No rash.. back is feeling better.. sleeping about an hour on my side and the rest of the night on my back.
At almost four weeks, I went back to church for the first time since the surgery. I am four weeks and 2 days post-op, and yesterday was my first time driving. I do the stairs several times throughout the day (kitchen is downstairs, bedrooms upstairs). I have cooked dinner the last couple evenings. I am exhausted by the time we sit down to dinner. The dizziness is almost non-existent in the morning and is in full swing by dinner time. I got my jeans on for the first time - though I did use a hair band to keep the waist a little more loose than normal. No rash, back is feeling much better, and sleep most of the night on my side.
Everyone heals differently.. some heal remarkably fast, some are more average, some are much slower. You had MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR surgery done. Don't push yourself. Don't let anyone else push you. Listen to your body.
I found that cold compresses on both the back of my neck and on my forehead were the best relief for the nausea attacks. Ice water made me more "crampy" so I stuck with room temperature or warm water. Watered down cranberry juice was a God-send. I ate a lot of toast
Hang in there.. ask me as many questions as you want, I don't mind.. Ask the other women too.. that's why we're all here!

Thank you! Funny you mention the rash. I have that too!!
I'm going to just take it easy and let myself heal. Thanks for the encouragement. I really needed to here that it gets better
