Uterine prolapse

This whole hysterectomy has really taken me by surprise, as I had gone to my doctor with what I suspected was a prolapsed uterus, not realizing that would probably lead to surgery. My question is, what are other ladies experiences with hysterectomy combined with bladder repair (Birch), my hospital stay has me freaked out, can someone give me some peace of mind ?

Uterine prolapse

Hi Neesers Like you, I went to see my DR with what I had guessed was a uterine prolapse (and a pretty bad one - I could see my cervix if I looked down ) and walked out of her office scheduled for surgery. It turned out I had a third degree uterine prolapse, a cystocele (bladder prolapse) and a rectocele (rectal prolapse). I had ten days to prepare for the surgery, and did not find out about this wonderful site until I came home from the hospital.

I had a TVH (total vaginal hysterectomy), with A&P (anterior and posterior) repairs and a bladder lift, plus had my ovaries removed at the same time (BSO). I was in the hospital for two nights. The morning after surgery, my catheter was removed. I tried all day to urinate on my own, but could not -- I had so much swelling in that area that my urethra was squeezed shut, because of all the repair work. Fortunately my DR had warned me that that was a possibility, so I wasn't too scared. I went home with a catheter and kept it in for a week, after which I removed it (the nurse had showed me how - very easy) and everything was much better.

In addition, because of the posterior repair, it was uncomfortable to sit for about six weeks afterwards, especially on hard surfaces. I ended up carrying a donut pillow with me everywhere and that helped a lot. The incision there itched a lot as it healed. Some things that helped with that were Fleet wipes and a spray can of Dermoplast, as well as a squeeze bottle full of warm water, which I used to rinse off after using the bathroom.

I hope this helps. Good luck with your surgery!

s,
-Linda
