Pre-op jitters and BRAC gene

Surgery scheduled for the 23rd and earlier this week I was a nervous wreck and had my first ever full fledged panic attack. That was scary! I think I over researched and had so many questions and worries running through my brain, it was overwhelming.

I feel SO MUCH BETTER about the surgery after the pre-op appt a couple days ago. Being able to voice my concerns and ask all my questions helped a lot. I was so glad I had written down my questions. Planning on DaVinci supracervical hyst, keeping ovaries as long as everything looks good.

Then my doctor went over family history. My paternal grandmother and her 3 sisters all had breast cancer, 2 at an early age, 1 also had ovarian cancer, and my grandmother had uterine & cervical cancer as well. My dad has no sisters, my mom has no history of cancer on her side. My dr suggested I be tested for the BRAC gene and we probably won't get the results until the day before surgery.

Now I'm getting worried about the test results. If I test positive for the gene my dr wants to take ovaries and cervix. Has anyone else tested positive for the gene without primary family members having a history? And either way, did you have everything removed as a preventive measure?

Thanks!

Re: Pre-op jitters and BRAC gene

Eastlakelane:

I have my surgery the 24th, and I began to have anxiety attacks yesterday. It don't last long (just 2 minutes or so) but it is completely out of the blue. I was initially told by Dr. that would have a LAVH but in my pre pre-op call (which I didnt know they call) the nurse said I will have a TLH as outpatient!!!!!
I will have my pre op appointment on 5/22 and I hope evything gets clarified before the big day! I wish you well, God is in control.

Hi eastlakelane

I don't have an answer to your question, but I have read other posts from women in your same position. Hopefully, they will read see your post and respond.

This could be a difficult choice. Carefully go over the pluses and minuses with your doctor.

Good luck to you....
