I just don't want food...anybody else lose their appetite?

I'm 3 weeks post-op and I still just don't feel like eating. It was understandable at first as I was on a liquid diet for 4 days in the hospital. But by now I sure thought I'd have my appetite back. Overall it's a blessing in disguise I guess, as I've lost 20 pounds. But something about it doesn't feel right.

Does anybody else feel like this...like eating is something you do only because you have to?

Why did they have you on a liquid diet for four days? Seems a little excessive for a hyst. I had no appetite for at least the first two weeks...then it came back little by little. I believe it's the anesthsia.

I just don't want food...anybody else lose their appetite?

Monica,

I was on a liquid diet because of complications I had during my surgery. It ended up being, in my surgeon's words, "the most difficult hysterectomy" he's ever done, and very scary. It had to do with a fibroid that was in a really, really bad place, which took 3 1/2 hours to remove. I lost half my blood and had to go to ICU for the first day. Anyway, I didn't do well as far as being able to digest real food until day 5, when I was finally able to go home.

Fun, huh?

My TAH was 6/20 - 4 1/2 weeks and still no appetite. i was on a liquid diet for two days, cleared to eat the third day but had nausea/vomiting, and finally able to eat something the night of the fourth day. I've lost 25 pounds (which I needed to lose) and have a doctor's appointment tomorrow. It will be one of the questions I ask but things are at least tasting better and smelling better. I used to drink coffee every morning and I am just now enjoying it again. However, I am having indigestion nearly every day now.

Stawzie,

I hear you about the coffee! I used to enjoy my coffee in the mornings, too, but now I can barely stand it. The coffee in the hospital was horrible! I'm used to the really good stuff, but even that doesn't taste great right now.

I was concerned for awhile. I didn't like anything. Things I used to love tasted awful. I'm 6 weeks post op now and things are getting back to normal. I'm almost back to my old self on eating again.

Wow...I'm sorry to hear you had such a hard time...that **** fibroid went kicking and screaming! I think you'll get your appetite back soon....I think because your body went through SO much maybe that's why no appetite? I really hope that you feel better soon.

I will keep you in my prayers.

I just don't want food...anybody else lose their appetite?

I didn't have much of an appetite for a few weeks...but I knew I had to eat.

I decided to treat my food like medicine. "morning - take protein shake" "lunch - take piece of chicken" "dinner - take bit of steak AND bread/potato AND veggies"

I only managed breakfast and dinner for the longest time - in fact, over a year later my sleeping and eating habits are still somewhat affected from the habits I developed post-op.

So - treat food like a med. Take a high-end multi vitamin mineral tab - and get some popsicles! I actually started getting the frozen fruit juice bars (no sugar) after a while, and I lived on those!

I even lost my chocolate craving - now THAT was scary! (No worries....it comes back).

Arly3...Thanks for the advice! I think I will get a multi-vitamin of some kind. And I love the popsicle idea. That actually sounds like something I would enjoy eating.

Chocolate? I can't imagine that craving coming back. But I'll trust that it will...someday.

Thanks, again!

Hi,

I'm almost 12 weeks out from a TAH, and my appetite is still not normal. I eat mainly because i must. Sometimes i feel a little hungry, but not much. They say it gets better in time.

Take care,

lala
