Ovary Removal with Vaginal Hysterectomy?

Saw my doctor for a pre-pre-op visit, since I had many questions I wanted to have answered before I actually go in for my pre-op visit on October 8th. One question I asked him was about removing my ovaries at the time of my hyst. From everything I've read and heard, it's best to have them taken out at the time of the hyst to avoid possible cancer situations later in life (I'm 53, so removing the ovaries is not a problem for me). The doctor said that he would TRY to remove the ovaries at the time of my surgery -- however, since I'm having my hyst and repairs done vaginally, it might not be possible, since sometimes the ovaries are too high up to be removed vaginally. Has anyone else out there been in this same situation, and if so, how did it go for you?

Ovary Removal with Vaginal Hysterectomy?

Hi,
I had my TVH/BSO on 9/2. My Dr was not concerned at all about removing the ovaries and all vaginally. He did of course have to advise me of the possibility of laparoscopic assistance if necessary. It wasn't.
Have you considered getting a second opinion. Doctor's all have their specialties and experience with different procedures. Might be worth your time to talk to another doctor if you have strong feelings about how the surgery is done.
Best wishes,
Gail

OVARY REMOVAL WITH VAGINAL HYSTERECTOMY?

I had a Tvh on Jan 14 -o3. I'm 51 and dr also advised I take them out. Ovarian cancer is normally detected when it is too late. I like the idea of having one less thing to worry about. I take premarin .625 and feel great. I guess there are still risk with hrt, so only you can decide. The only problem they had removing the ovaries was that they nicked my bladder. Course I go to a military teaching hospital, but I hear it can happen during a vaginal hyst (close quarters). It caused me to have a bladder repair and a catheter for 2 weeks. Good Luck on your decision. Ask questions, get facts. Bye Janet

Ovary Removal with Vaginal Hysterectomy?

My DR also said that they will take the ovaries if they could reach them. I called back and spoke with the surgical nurse who said they almost always can get them and I can request that they take them lapriscopically. I requested that and it is all set to do it vaginally if possible and through the belly button if not. You could ask if you can request that too?? I also asked the nurse (she's been very helpful) if the ovaries are lower or higher based on time of month and she said it has more to do with your hormone level, as in, how close to menopause you are. hope that helps a bit!
