Is one ovary as good as two?
My doctor wants to take out my left ovary during my hyst.. I'm all for that as it is the source of some of my worst pain! He does not want me to have to go through another surgery down the road if it's left in and continues to cause me so much pain. Anyways, I would love to hear from anyone who was left with just one ovary! Did you have to go on HRT? Or does the one ovary pump out enough hormones to keep you off of HRT? What has been your experience? Thanks!

Is one ovary as good as two?
Hi Julie,
I had hoped to keep both ovaries. During surgery, my Dr. discovered that my left ovary was adhered to my uterus by endo, which explained a lot of my pain during ovulation! So it came out with the uterus, but since the right ovary looked perfectly healthy, he left it in. I was 43 then and showing no sign of menopause.
My Dr. told me that one ovary can indeed do the work of two. After about 5 weeks of hot flashes, my ovary finally "got pumping" again. I could tell because I got PMS. Just no period afterwards, of course! So remember that even if you keep one ovary, there is often still hormonal upheaval in the early recovery weeks.
I did have a spell a few months ago when hot flashes returned. My Dr. put me on Cenestin (a plant-source estrogen) for awhile. I'm now off it again, and doing fine. My Dr. explained that the ovaries may occasionally have times where they aren't quite doing their job and need some help.
Anyway, I was so glad that I got to keep even one ovary, as I understand that even if the ovaries "fail", they still produce small amounts of beneficial hormones. And it is usually easier to supplement your hormones than to replace them entirely.
My very best to you...

I only have one ...
I lost my right ovary back in 1996, but I had all of my other parts. It works with just one, I was hoping that it would mean a period every other month!!!!! To much wishful thinking!!!! Anyway, that's they only thing they are letting me keep after my TVH. The dr. assures me that it will work just fine. He did say at first, it will shut down just from the trauma of the surgery. I may have some hot flashes, etc... But it will begin to work and I will not need any hormones. I already take something for serotonin, I will continue that of course.
Good luck

Is one ovary as good as two?
My Mom had one ovary removed along with a TAH over 30 years ago, and has never had a problem. Her menopause (a few years later) was just a couple of hot flashes and then over. She has never taken HRT- her genes blessed her with strong bones and a healthy cardio system. (this was her decision, not her doctor's;but for her it was a good choice).
good luck with your surgery!

Is one ovary as good as two?
this too was my biggest concern prior to surgery. My doctor assured me that one ovary produces enough hormones to keep ya balance all nice n sweetly. My other question to him was ... "but how will I know if it's working??" his reply ... "oh <laughing> You'll know <glances at my sweetie ... more laughing> You'll both know>"
So far, one ovary, absolutely no issues.

I kept one ovary!!!!
My Doc said half of an ovary is enough for most women to not have to go on HRT. I am 28 so he wanted to leave one if it was possible. He was able to leave the left ovary but I can not tell yet if I feel any different. I have had a couple of weird spells but I think it is probably to early to tell if my hormones are gonna be outta wack yet. I think most people do okay after a few months though.
