scared

Hi I am 43 and last wednesday had laproscopic surgery to remove stage 4 endometriosis / my bowel is involved and is growing with my uterus. The surgery wasn't successful and I have been told that the only option I have is a hysterectomy because my uterus is large with adenomyosis and large fibriods. I have been told that I have no chance of conceiving a child and that if I decide not to have the hysterectomy I will have to have this terrible pain until menopause. So I have been booked in for an urgent hysterectomy. My head is spinning, we have never been able to have a family and I have desperately wanted one and now I will never have a child of my own. I am devasted. My body hurts and I really don't know what to expect, what questions to ask the dr, how to approach this. Can anyone help???

Re: scared

Monica thank you for your reply, the information is so helpful. Endo has taken my life away from me, I am in pain 24/7 and my bowel is encased and firmly attached to both my uterus and fibriod. A big mess inside. Thank you for your input.

My goes out to you and your situation!

Have you considered talking to a counselor about your feelings? Many ladies who were facing a hysterectomy and who had fertility issues have found it helpful to sit down and talk to someone about the whole situation. Possibly your GYN will be able to recommend someone for you. It is perfectly normal to feel devastated in your situation and talking to someone could help you through the steps of grief you are feeling.

As far as your surgery, it sounds like the adenomyosis and fibroids are more the reason for the hysterectomy than the endometriosis. Because adenoymyosis and endometriosis are not the same condition (though doctors and researchers used to think they were the same), they don't always respond to the same treatment options. However, types of progesterone and progestin have been found to be somewhat effective for treating adeno, endo, and fibroids. Other possibilities might include one of the GnRH analogues or an aromatase inhibitor (or combination of meds). Have you tried any of these options at all? Did you doctor mention any other possibilities you could try to at least buy you some time so that you can be more emotionally prepared for the surgery? Even if surgery is going to be the final step, trying an option could allow you to work through the emotions involved with the surgery before you have to head to OR and deal with recovery and all the emotions that can entail!

I would suggest seeking at least a second opinion from a specialized gynecologist before heading into surgery, just to make sure this is the right choice for you and to be sure you have the most skilled surgeon you can find. Find a doctor who primarily treats women with pelvic pain issues rather the one who deals mostly with obstetrics. If you could find an endometriosis specialist, it might be very helpful for you as any endometriosis that is not removed could cause issues down the road. You might see if this website is helpful for you: http://www.nzendo.co.nz/Treatment.html.

I am so glad that you have found this site and I hope that the information and support we can offer you will help you along this journey! Know that you are not alone!

Re: scared

zgbmc05 thank you

weiser Thank you for your reply. I have been talking this though today with a counsellor ... I am very raw, and it is difficult. I live in New Zealand and the medical system here is not the greatest. In the past year I have had 2 surgeries and neither worked ... the only option left is the hysterestomy, all other options have failed. I have had 2 different surgeons do laproscopic surgery to close me and say I need lapatomy surgery .... I have just foun out today that I again am under a completely different team again. This is becoming all too much - dealing with our health system is just a nightmare - it is not easy at all. Hoping that at some point things will change and that the pain both physically and emotionally will ease

How frustrating for you!

The link I shared above is to a New Zealand Endometriosis site, it it is at all helpful for you.

I am glad you are talking to a counselor today! I hope you find it helpful to be able to express your feelings over this entire situation!

Re: scared

Weiser thank you I did realise that this was the NZ Endo website ... they have great resources there and the contact people are really lovely .... I have been talking things over with the support people over here .... yesterday I received a hospital appointment for April .... I am under another surgeon again .... that is the 3rd in less than a year .... I wish there was some continuaty of care over here .... but alais there is not .... I am on the urgent list wish means I have a least a 3 month wait .... but that could extend to 6 months which is highly likely .... at least I see that the longer the wait .... even though I am in severe pain daily I will get to deal with the emotions concerning all of this
