What should I expect?
I'm scheduled for April 6th, just found out my date last week. I am a fairly healthy 32 year old with a 21 month old. How in the world am I going to take care of her after surgery? (My DH is military and "unavailable".) My MIL can take DD for a week the week OF surgery, but how long should I expect to need additional help after that?
I apologize if this is in the wrong forum, but I'm new and panicking!

Re: What should I expect?
Hi there! Here's a link to an article about recovering with small children at home:
https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/article_371052.htm
This definitely brings on its own set of challenges and I hope this article helps.
I wish you the best in your surgery and recovery. There is a pre-op chat coming up this Thursday which will give you an opportunity to meet other pre-op members as well as hostesses who have experiences to share.
Best wishes!

Re: What should I expect?
If your DH is deployed maybe you can tap into your Key Spouses (or the equivalent for your branch). We were lucky in that we had a bunch of use or lose so my DH will be home 32 days with me. I'll let everyone know if that was a good idea or not later ROFL

Re: What should I expect?
Thank you! I read the article and will take any and all further advice! My DD is quite the active toddler, and is used to having a very active mommy, so this will be quite a challenge!

Re: What should I expect?
He isn't deployed, but is in school where taking any amount of leave is impossible. At least he graduates a month after my surgery, but then we have OCONUS orders. (Which brings me to another set of issues. I don't think I will be feeling up to moving or enduring an 18 hour plane trip.) We don't have a KVN/FRG here, as it is a school environment, and we are one of the few families living off-base. This is one of those instances I really miss the the traditional sense of family being back in the fleet.

Re: What should I expect?
Blech! That really bites. We're due to PCS in Nov (back to the states!) and I dern well better be all healed after 8 mos LOL I don't blame you for being worried about pcs'ing a month later. Hopefully your dh will be able to help you with that.
I have a friend here who moved the day after she got out of the hosptial after a TAH. She said she had her hubby move a box onto a chair so she could unpack one by one. Thankfully it was a local move (obviously).
Wish I could be of more help to you sister! =(

Re: What should I expect?
I have two little ones... they both went to stay with family two days before my surgery (to give us time alone before my surgery) and are scheduled to stay with the family members until next Sunday. (16 days post op give or take) I know this isn't possible for everyone... but if at all possible have them stay with family a week or two. If not, then set up with a day care.. either some one who has an in home day care, or the day care on base, or another preschool kind of daycare that takes kids older then 6 months. That way during the day at least you can rest and hopefully they sleep most of the night. Call on family... sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, parents, close friends with kids, any one to help care for them.
They will have fun going to "sleepovers" or going to play with kids at the daycare all day long and you can get the much needed rest.
If none of that is possible, put their stuff low so it's easy to reach... rent kids movies and don't be afraid to let the t.v. babysit for a few days... Remember not to pick them up... but to comfort them, lay them next to you and just rub their bellys and give mini hugs...
Good luck.

Re: What should I expect?
Also... would be possible for you to perhaps stay behind when your spouse first leaves for his orders. Perhaps you could stay with a friend, or at a hotel for a couple extra weeks and then join him.. give yourself more time to heal before the plane ride.
Just a thought. :-)

Re: What should I expect?
Great suggestions, thank you!! I think I am going to appeal to DH to find a daycare for DD. That way I can get some help during the day at least. I'm a work-at-home-mom/business owner, so I have enough on my plate as it is. I can't be superwoman all the time, and I have a hard time admitting it.

Re: What should I expect?
Good luck Busybuggie, yes daycare will be very benefical to you. My tah bso was March 4th. Hubby takes my 7 year old to daycare in the am and he rides the bus to and from there. Hubby will pick him up after he gets off of work. My daycare lady is making me dinner and hubby will bring it home (chicken in her crockpot) you will be amazed at the offers of help-take people up on it too!!! Hugs and well wishes, Leslie
