Catheter!?

Does anyone know if they place this while you are awake or while in surgery? Crazy as it may seem but I am so fearful of the placement. I have had it done once and I think I would rather someone rip all of my toenails of with pliers than to have to deal with that again! Horrific!

Catheter!?

TVH- had mine put in when I was totally out. Removal about 10 hours after surgery - no pain at all!!!!! Be prepared - the nurse at my pre-op had tried to prepare me to come home with it due to extensive A & P repair. There was no problem and I was able to use the bathroom the evening of my surgery.

I hope your experience was as good as mine. The nurses were terrific and anything "icky" was all done when I was out of it!

Catheter!?

I too was asleep when they put it in. They took it out @ 6am the next day after surgery with no pain. I went pee shortly after they took it out. First time peeing was a little rough, but remember to relax.

Catheter!?

Hi,
I asked about this too and was told it would be put in while I was under anesthesia, however I do not know what type you will have but I am going to have a supracervical catheter which will be in for a week or two until I retrain my bladder how to pee WHAT!! I asked "How do they get it out then????" and the doctor says it comes out real easy. very very confused. Good luck!

Hysterscared35: You're not crazy, this was my biggest fear also!!! I had it done for a c section and totally agree with you, it is not pleasant when you are awake. They did mine for the TAH/BSO after I was under anesthesia, so that was a huge relief...make sure you talk to your doctor about this issue....I wish I would have as I was fearful for no reason. Best wishes and prayers on the 11th!!!

Do they do this if your surgery is Laproscopily?

I hope that is the case with me. Can you please explain what an A&P is?

I know that my doctor does it for all of the procedures as well as bowel prep. It minimizes the chance of damaging other organs during the surgery.

I am sure some docs do it differently.

I was SO freaked out about the catheter, but my hyster was laparascopic, so it was inserted after I was asleep and taken out before I woke! I was able to urinate almost immediately and had no pain at all!

It was much easier than I'd worried about.

This is one of my fears, too. I'm pretty sure though, like others said, it will be done after anesthesia. My Dr. has prepared me to come home with a catheter and I'm hoping and praying that won't be the case.

Also, when I had to have a cystoscopy in the Dr. office, they used topical lidocaine to numb the area a little. I guess that would always be an option, too even for catheter removal maybe? I don't think the removal is as big of an issue though because it's pretty quick.
