To Keep Ovaries Or Not?
Hi Girls,
I am new to Hyster Sisters and I am trying to research whether to make sure my Dr takes my ovaries or not.
I am 35, my husband has had a vascetomy (1 1/2 years ago) went off the b/c and have been in hell every since.
I was diagnosed with endo in April and was told to call my Dr when the endo returned, two months later it returned with a vegence. Second month of hell (this month) I called and scheduled my surgery (September 16th).
I have a friend who had similar signs of endo that I have (attached to my colon, uterus tipped backward, adheared to colon) and she had her hyst about a year ago and is now complaining of paid with BM's about once a month. I am afraid if he does not take my ovaries I will continue with pain?
Not sure if anyone else knows or has knowledge of this, but I would appreciate some imput.
Thanks

To Keep Ovaries Or Not?
Hi ((((Andrea)))) and Welcome to Hyster Sisters I'm so happy you found us: this the best place to find answers to your questions, get information that you can actually use and, always, to get lots and lots of support.
While I didn't have endo, I also was faced with the decision of whether or not to keep my ovaries: I was 44 and, initially, my doctor left the decision entirely up to me. In the end, with the help of my doctor and of my Hyster Sisters, I opted to keep my ovaries, should they be found to be healthy. To this day, 2 1/2 years after my hyst, they are still working and I'm happy of this ultimate decision.
However, what was good for me is not necessarily good for everyone. Hopefully, someone will come along soon, with some insight about the likelyhood of recurring endo after a Hyst, especially when the ovaries are retained.
In the meantime, here are some links to resources on the ovary debate:

To Keep Ovaries Or Not?
Andrea35
I don't know for sure if I have endo, will soon find out...after all the years of pain, rupturing ovarian cysts and other nasty affects my doctor and I came to the conclusion that if by the slightest chance and it would be slight that one of my ovaries were in working order it would be best to take them now anyway. It is however a very personal decision. I was on b/c pills combined with premerin to try to regulate aunt flo's visits and lessen her flo's for 4 years, it helped for the first 2 1/2 years and then it got even worse. I have needed my hyst for several years but due to age my insurance would not cover it. So we exhausted every other option until I was out of them and now I am deemed "old enough" at 38.
If the decision is yours to make, do some home work and talk to your DH & dr, you have to do what is right for you.
Good luck,
Donna

To Keep Ovaries Or Not?
Hi Andrea!
I've been here at HS for about a year now and I'm on the Chat Team. One thing I know is that the ovaries and Endo do not get along.
From what I understand, the ovaries produce estrogen and the endo feeds on the estrogen. Even after your surgery (if you keep your ovaries), when your ovaries wake up and start producing again, there's a very good chance the endo could come back Hate to say it, but that could mean further surgeries.
My advice to you is to speak with your surgeon about that possibilty. I know how very miserable endo is and to go through this surgery just to end up in worse pain later would be devastating. To me, that's the most important information you can get. Keep reading here (do a search on ovaries or endo) and be as educated as you can.
Best of luck in your decision sweetie.
