Diet after surgery?
Hi everybody,
I am pretty concerned about what to eat after surgery. When I take painkillers I get REALLY CONSTIPATED & the lack of exercise won't help either.
I was planning on just drinking protein shakes, eating soups, etc...
Does anybody know of a healthy diet to follow the first few weeks after surgery to help with constipation & to help not gain a ton of weight while lying around doing nothing?
Thanks! ))
PS I'm not good at any type of FASTING!!!!

Re: Diet after surgery?
I'm sticking to lighter foods - eggs, fruit, yogurt and lots of liquids - water and juice. I had pasta with olive oil earlier today. I think oats help w/constipation as well. Also taking Colace stool softener a couple times a day.

Maybe try to mix in a spoonful of that water soluble fiber with the protein drinks to keep things moving...anytime I've had a lot of protein, I get really constipated! Also drink lots of water because that helps keep things moving too! :-)

Re: Diet after surgery?
I'm just home for the first full day today and am going to return to my regular diet tomorrow. My doctor did suggest that since I drink a protein drink each morning to just add Miralax to it (tasteless and no grittyness). The nurses suggested hot liquid drink first thing each morning and also cream of wheat. Am also taking Colace once each night.

Re: Diet after surgery?
Thanks for all the info everybody.
I tested out RestoraLAX (Canadian version of MiraLAX) & it doesn't taste horrible or is gritty like other laxatives. It doesn't seem to make me bloated or gassy either. I will add it to my shake in the morning & drink lots of water!

Re: Diet after surgery?
I wasn't very hungry for the first week after surgery. I tried to eat very healthy food but craved salty things. I ate eggs, soup, nachos, yogurt, whole wheat toast etc. I used stool softeners morning and evening plus 1 tbls Milk of Magnesia in the evening to keep things moving without constipation. My DH brought home ice cream cones and that was delicious. Not being constipated is key. Drink gallons of liquid!

Re: Diet after surgery?
The first few day I had almost no appetite. Im 6 days post-op and watermelon has been a great for me. Lots of soup, yogurt, cantaloup, etc. I have done a cap full of Miralx every morning the last few mornings to help keep things moving. The first few days I did stool softeners as well. For fun...slushies!!

Re: Diet after surgery?
Hi
I too ate light, Yogurt with fresh fruit and granola, watermelon salads jello with fruit and a little pasta. I am just now starting to eat what my husband calls real meals but am not eating heavy meats, just small amounts of chicken with my salads.
Good luck

Re: Diet after surgery?
I am 13 weeks out and still am dealing with eating and constipation issues. I simply can not eat processed carbs...at all...they are like cement to my system.
I survived on shakes and smoothies...still do. I add ground flax seed to my morning smoothies.
Part of my problem is am still very swollen in my belly and once I get too much food in my stomach I get very uncomfortable. Plus I have always had constipation issues and since surgery they are worse.
I'd stick with as raw a diet as you can tolerate...I've been doing that and I am finally starting to feel good.
Hang in there and be prepared for weird cravings...I've never had a sweet tooth until now. I crave Sour Patch Kids and will eat them until they are gone...not good.
