Pre Op Questions

I go to see by OBGYN this week and thanks to all of you, I have lots of questions to ask him about my upcoming surgery in August.

This may sound silly, but, how long after surgery were you able to "feel comfortable" in heels or should I plan to wear flats for a few months?

I have a wedding to attend.

Also, do you feel six weeks post op is too early to fly out of state?

Heels

I'm 3 weeks post op and I had to go out of the house this week and interestingly enough the only shoes I could slip on were my boots (with heels). I've always worn heels so it wasn't a problem for me. I wouldn't have thought to do it the first couple weeks (walked around mostly in my booties!)

A friend of mine had her surgery six weeks ago and at her 2nd week flew to Florida for recovery... but make sure you talk to your doctor before boarding a flight somewhere!

Good luck in August!

Pre Op Questions

6 weeks will probably be ok but you will still tire very easily so plan accordingly. ONce you get to your destination you may feel like all you can do is drop onto a flat surface and sleep for a while, so don't have something planned as soon as you get there. Luggage has to be taken into account also, you will probably have just gotten your clearance to return to normal activites at 6 weeks but watch the lifting (I wouldn't try lifting carry on luggage over your head yet) and the pushing. Even pulling a wheeled suitcase will take more out of you then you will realize.

If the flight is more than two hours do foot pumping exercises while you are seated and try to get up and walk every one to 2 hours. You can still be prone to blood clots this far out.

At that point I also still got back aches when I over did it besides the swelly belly, so I think low heels or flats would be best.

You should also check with your doctor first for his opinion on the safety of flying at that point.
