Help!! Almost out of pain meds....

I am 3 weeks out and I am still having pain. I only have a few pain pills left. I try to take Ibuprofen, but when I am in a lot of pain it doesn't help so I take a hydrocodone. I was trying to save them for when I return to work in about another week I hope, so that I could use them then if needed. What should I do? Do you think the doctor will give me more, I am scared to go back to work with out something stronger than an Ibu. because I don't want to be in pain!! Maybe I wont need them, I dont know!! I don't want my doctor to think I am just wanting them. Is it normal to ask for more?

I doubt that if you called and asked for a refill your doc would have an issue with it. You had MAJOR surgery only 3 weeks ago....its not surprising you are still in pain at times. I took pain meds for weeeeeeks after my surgery. Had to have several refills. Especially if you are going back to work and will be moving around more you will probably need something stronger if you are still totally uncomfy.

I took percocet for the first 2 weeks along with motrin 800mg.

I am still taking the motrin and plan to get it refilled. When I ran out of percocet - there were a few days that I wished I had more. The pain was pretty bad.

I'm not sure what they can give you that will be strong and still allow you to drive (if you need to drive to work), but I would still definitely ask.

You could certainly use stronger meds when you get home from work each day.

I hope you can get some relief soon...

I think you should call your DR and rather than asking for more hydrocodone right off the bat, start by asking if you should still be needing narcotic pain medications at three weeks post op or if they need to see you. THEN you can say that you are still in a significant amount of pain and almost out of your pain meds.

DRs are sometimes reluctant to refill narcotics, though, because they cause constipation. They also mask pain which sometimes we need to be paying more attention to - you can jeopardize your recovery if you go back to work on narcotics rather than listen to your body, which is telling you it's not ready.
