24 JUNE Sched & Nerrrrrrrve-wracked
Hi Everyone. Pretty much losing my mind--feeling very unprepared for Saturday's surgery. Crying all the time, wondering re my decision. My condition isn't life-threatening (large Fibroids which've become verrrry uncomfortable) so I guess it's my choice which freaks me out. (Does that make it "elective" surgery?) I'm 51 (gasp!) & really afraid of (a) dying on the table; (b) waking up to be told my ovaries had to go; (c) the scars; (d) the pain; (e) any unhappy after-effects; (f) just about everything that pops into my overly-creative brain. Am trying "positive" visualizations, but the bad images take over. All feels so surreal: Is this my life? I'm hoping that once this all passes, my life can stop being Uterocentric, which is what it's become. Almost every waking moment...& sleepless nights...obsessing. Wish I could approach this in a healthier, more positive manner. Aah, if wishes were horses...
Also feeling waaay unprepared for this. I've been reading posts encouraging people to bring a special pillow, a nightshirt, an eye mask, earplugs, music, etc. to the hospital. Should've started stockpiling supplies a year ago when I first noticed this site. But I just casually visited on & off, never really thinking it'd come to this. Then last Friday, when I could not longer stand how bad I felt, my M.D. scheduled me for this coming Saturday. And all I have is a tube of lip balm...
Finally, I always kind of assumed I'd have kids--I really love them--but never found myself in a relationship conducive to having them &'ve been pretty much resigned to that at my Advanced Age. However, I was hoping that my ability to do so would just fade away naturally, & not be torn away like this...
Thanks for the opportunity to ramble on & on here; any heartening words of advice much appreciated.

Good luck to you Saturday. Consider yourself lucky you have only had to think about it for a week. I hope they dont have to take your ovaries if you dont want them to. I am 44 no kids and had everything removed. But I feel great. I am 7 weeks out and am very happy. As far as what to bring to the hospital dont freak. I brought a toothbrush (that I left there) a bathrobe to walk around the halls and my cell phone. I went in on a Tues and came home Thursday. They gave me a pillow in the hospital to hold against my belly for later. You will be fine and it will be over before you know it.

Sorry you're so stressed. Mine's scheduled for the 20th of next month and I'm getting nervous too. I've worked in surgery almost 10 years and not once have I ever seen a woman die on the table during a hysterectomy. Those cases are very rare so try not to even think about that. I've worried about it too and I figure if that doesn't kill me I'll do it myself by stressing and causing myself to have a stroke or something, lol! I've had several women in my family have hysterectomies for fibroids and they are so glad they did. No more pain, no more irregular bleeding. Don't worry about the pain, sure you'll be sore but that's what the pain meds are for & if they aren't working for you make sure you complain to your doctor so they give you something that does work. Don't just try and tough it out if you're in pain, none of them would. These days the incision is made along the pubic hair line and you'd be amazed at what they can get through a small incision, with time it should fade and be hardly noticable. I was worried about scarring with my tubal and now I can't hardly find it. I hope all goes well with your ovaries, that's my main concern too. I don't want to wake up and find them missing. I'm really worried about having no sex life after it's all said and done since I'm only 30, so I'm trying to read only the positive comments. Everything will be fine and before you know it you'll be on here posting about your 1 year anniversary. Good luck & I'll pray for you to have a safe surgery and a fast & happy recovery.

8 months after, dont be scared
Things are going to be better. Im 8 months post op and just decided to read a few posts on this side. What to take. Granny Panties, Loose PJs. Some things to make you feel pretty. This site kept me from backing out as I had fibroids for sure but the rest was to be found. Wondered if I couldnt "live with my pain" A few hours here on both preop and post op and I kept on schedule. I did have some infection that Im sure was from not enough precautions by caregivers not the OR. I suggest making sure they have on gloves or you ask them to wash their hands every single time they come to your room. I did feel better to look better. I washed my short style hair in the sink while sitting in a chair on day 2 in the castle. I put on some pretty PJ s and some makeup. They called me the pretty patient when I took my required walks. When I look better I feel better and would recommend it to anyone. Plan to take it as easy as possible afterward, I didnt need too many naps but I did spend a lot of time sitting in a chair or recliner and just visiting with my Mom who was my ultimate caregiver when DH went back to work. Plan on a few months (it took me 6) to get back to really feeling like yourself. I didnt feel bad but just normal chores from pre surgery would kick my butt. I stayed more tired and easily became sore from too much work for months. This I will say was hard to deal with because everyone expected "I should be over this". Now, no periods, no pain, no problems from this and it is wonderful!!!! Good luck for the best possible surgery outcome!

Been there, done that. Hyst is a very safe surgery. Have a good discussion with your anesthesiologist beforehand. I told mine to make sure I woke up afterwards and he said most people request to stay asleep during the whole thing so I said "that too" LOL.
The first 3-4 weeks are kind of rough but then it is so FREEING to have all the pain and bleeding gone. It was the best decision I ever made.

I can definitely relate! I had my hyst scheduled just over two weeks in advance. Not sure how anyone waits longer than that. I was a wreck the day before. I should have asked my dr. for a mild sedative - just in case.
Post op, my tummy is a little swollen and I feel like I gave birth to 20 lb twins. I have had very little gas and no constipation problems. I sent my mother out for a couple pairs of larger underwear. Mine were just a little binding across the stomach. I have a teeny bit of discharge/drainage. I did not use my own jammies in the hospital (didn’t want to add to the laundry at home or get any blood/drainage on them).
Here are the things I did that made a huge difference:
Took my own pillow
Took music with earphones to drown out noise. (The nurses come in and out of your room all night long and the hallway can be quite noisy)
Took eye shades, which I used whenever I slept (Again, when the nurses went in and out, the bright light of the hall would shine in my eyes.)
Took lip balm
I had one bad gas pain at 4am (about 13 hours after surgery) and started taking Gas X. I would take one or two every time I would get pain killers.
The nurse gave me a stool softener before going to sleep for the night, and then another in the morning.
I drank TONS of water (easily five or six pitchers) while I was at the castle and have continued while I am at home.
I walked the moment I got to my room from recovery (to the bathroom), twice again that evening and then twice more in the morning.
I packed reading materials but didn’t read anything other than the menu.
I also should have skipped taking all toiletries. I did brush my teeth, but since I was at the castle less than 24 hours total, it could have waited until I got home.
My experience has been a piece of cake so far. It’s only my fourth day post op, so it will be interesting to see how everything progresses. I’m glad it’s over.
