Walking at 3 months post op

Hi Ladies

I am 3 months post op, yea! I took it seriously to getting back to doing something active to shed these UNWANTED POUNDS and renew my health. I started walking about a week ago walking about 1 and half mile four days a week. I felt great and decided to walk even more miles on the track (outside). Well, I decided to walk a little more this week. Just lil shy under 5 miles every day this week so far! I walk with my family sometimes too. Well, I did not feel out of breath, but boy did my feet feel sore and legs as well, am I overdoing it? I have very good walking shoes . I felt little tension around incision too but not pain. I only felt this once during my entire time I started to walk the track, but I know the insides are still healing as well. Any one else out there walking(outside, not treadmill, not that it matters rather outside or inside walking).Share your experience with me. I want to make sure I am doing the right thing. Blessing to all.

Re: Walking at 3 months post op

Hi Lady,

Since I've been back to work almost 5 weeks, I walk at least 30 minutes every night during my lunch break. I work in a huge office complex and if I go around the complex two or three times a night, I get 30 minutes of areobic walking in. I have a pedometer that tells you how many areobic steps you walk, regular steps, how many calories you are burning and distance. The first week was a little challenging to me, but now I walk every night around 2 o'clock in the morning. I work the overnight shift, so that is why I am up all night. Over time, you feet and legs will not be sore anymore. Good luck to you, as I think that it is great to be out walking.

Next Friday, I will be 12 weeks post op and will resume bowling, as all of my restrictions will be lifted then. Please keep me posted with your walking progress.

Re: Walking at 3 months post op

Hello, I haven't been on a walking schedule yet. I do walk at least a few minutes a day sometimes. Well I walk down this huge hallway at work and come back. So that I don't have so many problems with my sitting 9hrs all day. I had trouble the one day I exercised so I haven't done it again. I still have internal stitches b/c of some delays now in my recovery. I reject stitches. I think it's important for us to walk/exercise and it's great that you are doing it. I guess b/c of my experience a few weeks back I am kind of afraid to walk again. And, it keeps raining here so I haven't even been able to try. Maybe, I'll take your post as a motivation and reminder to walk myself. Good luck with your recovery and goal to losing unwanted pounds. I lost 45 lbs in the last yr and 1/2. I did walk alot b/f and cut my food consumption to half of what it was. You might want to try that too - it's better than going on a full on diet.

Re: Walking at 3 months post op

I have been walking outside since week 3 post op from my THA /BSO. I just hit 90 days post op on Aug 5th. I started with a very slow half mile per day and have been doing 4-5 miles a day about 5 days a week. I walked 2-3 miles a day for about 2 or 3 weeks before increasing. I am a nurse and work on a busy cardiac floor. I started walking because I knew I would have to go back to work at 6 weeks. At work, I walk about 3-4 miles in an 8 hr shift. I have an accurate pedometer that use to track my distance.

I have done as much as 7-10 miles at a stretch. I don't have pain any where except my lower back. I can't tell if this is from the walking, post op discomfort or my HRT. It takes a lot for me to get short of breath so I do a fast paced walk.

I think the most important thing is to listen to your body. If you are feeling good then continue. I can tell that I am very tired on the days that I walk the longer distances. This past week I have started to do some jog/walk sequences. If anything, the walking is helping with some of my mood issues. I am really struggling with that aspect since surgery. One day I feel great and the next day I feel horrible! I hope it does not stay this way.
