TAH: Biopsy Necessary?

I found out I have fibroids, many of them, and will be undergoing a hysterectomy (removing uterus and cervix only) on April 18th. I will be having abdominal surgery due to the size of my uterus, it is rather large, and I seem to have numerous fibroids in there. My doctor informed me that I would have to have a biopsy of the uterus 5 days before the surgery in order to rule out cancer. I am very confused about this because if they are going to remove my uterus and cervix, why biopsy it first and put me through unnecessary pain? I have read others post on here about how painful it is and now I am scared to death and I'm trying to get my doctor to skip it. I really need to know if it is really necessary.

I had a biopsy last Friday. My surgery is in two days. I didn't feel a thing. He numb me first ( which didn't hurt either). Just a little cramping after ( nothing like period cramps ) and some bedding.

They like to know about cancer beforehand so they don't spread it around, and for staging. Some Drs require the biopsy. FWIW, they numbed me first, too, and I had no pain, although I understand not everyone gets the numbing and may have pain. (Taking ibuprofen in advance helped, too). A d&c under anesthesia is another option and you might ask your Dr, but truly my biopsy was nothing. Good luck, and if you have the biopsy ask about the numbing, if you are concerned.
