Confused about stitches under dermabond

Okay, so five weeks later I finally discover stitches were under the dermabond. For the first 4 weeks the dermabond was still on and I was swollen. As time progresses and swelling decreases I now see the ends of stitches coming out of one of the incisions. They were there the whole time I just mistook them for a scab. Figured that one when I thought the scab was breaking loose and I tried to pull it. Only 1/8th of an inch but eeeeewwww! Rule #1: Never pull anything after a surgery

So I came on here and researched and finally determined that the stitches explain the little hard bumps under each incision and the dark spots that are now appearing at each end of several of the incisions. Here is were I got confused... So do these stitches dissolve? Or do the stitches material rise to the surface and come through the skin? I am wondering if I need to be expecting the stitches to come out of the skin from each incision and not just the one that started that way. Does this answer differ my type of surgery? I had DaVinci.

Thanks for any insight!

Re: Confused about stitches under dermabond

I had the daVinci LSH on Monday. Are you talking about the glue "stitches" they put in/on your bellybutton and a few other incision sites?? Mine in/near my bellybutton lifted and peeled more every time I showered and finally I peeled it off today. I didn't see stitches, but I read that after 1 week, the glue stuff could come off. It's best for it to fall off naturally though. I can't believe yours has been on this long!!

Re: Confused about stitches under dermabond

Wow I had my surgery the day before yours (jan 12) and my dermabond has been gone since like week 2.
I have no stitches on my belly at all anymore, yes they just disolve. I had one in my belly button that I had to cut with scissors cause it was sticking out & bugging me, I cut it close to the skin.

Re: Confused about stitches under dermabond

AirForceWife04Thanks! So glad they will just dissolve I will clip the outer part as it is starting to catch on shirts.

BergdorfBlonde - not where the glue "stitches" the skin together, but underneath the skin further. I did not see the dark dots that I assume are knots until very recently as swelling has gone down. The stitch string is purple. I never would have known if not for it sticking out.

Yes my skin really keeps adhesives but I did not realize it was that much longer than everyone else!

Re: Confused about stitches under dermabond

I had a Da Vinci Hysterectomy on Feb. 17th. The dermabond on my incisions is just now starting to peel off after only one week. I don't see any stitches, just dark spots that look like scabs but I guess could be stitches. My doctor said all of my stitches would desolve. I thought they would remove the dermabond next week at my post op appointment.

Re: Confused about stitches under dermabond

Those stitches dissolve and the little tails sticking out will fall off when they do.

Until then, boy those little suckers itch! :-P
