OB/GYN Appt Today - AM I NUTS to ask for a hysterectomy?

Good morning!

I'm seeing a new ob/gyn today to discuss my CT scan from 4/16, showing a 2cm fibroid. My primary dr. didn't go into detail on the location, but knowing I have this, I just want it out.
I'm 42, divorced, never been pregnant. I don't see myself having children at this point in my life. I have my mind made up about some things: I don't want medication, injections, IUDs, birth control, or anything to just 'starve' the fibroid.
I deal with fatigue before and during my period, bloated abdomen, staying in bed at least one day due to tiredness, among other things.
I've been experiencing cramping in my abdomen for a while, which led to having the CT scan. Pain can move up/down, left/right, and the fibroid was the only thing that surfaced.
And do these things cause your cervix to move??? My dr. had to move it during my Pap exam. That has never happened before!
So basically, I don't want to run the risk of another one of these coming back, if just a one-inch sucker is causing this much of a problem.
Am I crazy to ask about a hysterectomy? I want to keep my ovaries, just take out the uterus.

Re: OB/GYN Appt Today - AM I NUTS to ask for a hysterectomy?

I don't think you're nuts at all but you'll probably be required either by the doc or your insurance company to take some sort of intermediate steps but, certainly, discuss this with the specialist, particularly with the shift in your cervical location/angle- That could potentially indicate the beginning of a prolapse which is no fun but would strengthen your case for hysterectomy if you're sure that's what you want to do.

I was allowed to cut to the chase with no argument from my doc or my insurer but I had more than 6 years of symptoms, multiple fibroids, a significantly enlarged uterus and a quick answer for why I was a poor candidate for most of the less radical options.... and I'm still not sure why I was not forced to jump through more hoops.

Re: OB/GYN Appt Today - AM I NUTS to ask for a hysterectomy?

Hi Delia, thanks for writing!
Yeah, that's my worry...that I have to try all this other stuff before the hysterectomy.
I don't know if the only thing going for me is my age. I'm not the type of person who does things radically...but I know how much pain I've been in, how I miss work because I'm too tired to get out of bed, and how uncomfortable I feel right now. It may not be a big deal to a doctor since she sees it all the time, but I know this is crazy. My coworkers notice my pain and comment on my cramping.
I don't know if my cervix moving has anything to do with the fibroid or not. But I don't know what else could explain it.
I'm glad you found some relief from your symptoms. I'm really glad I found this site.

Re: OB/GYN Appt Today - AM I NUTS to ask for a hysterectomy?

My hysterectomy has given me back my life and I hope that, whatever your course of treatment winds up being, that you find the same is true for you after your issues are resolved.

The movement of your cervix is probably not related to the fibroid but a seperate issue. There may be some slackening of connective tissue or (and man, I hope not) endometriosis.... or simply time- gravity is always the enemy.
When you speak to the specialist, ask if s/he sees any reason not to suspect adenomyosis- the intrusion of endometrial tissue into the uterine wall-it's difficult to diagnose because it so rarely shows up on imaging and may or may not be apparent in a biopsy sample. It's most often an exclusionary diagnosis- they've figured out what the problem *isn't* and adenomyosis is what's left that fits the symptoms. According to the Mayo Clinic's page on this topic, the only way to confirm with certainty such a diagnosis is post-hyst examination of the uterus.

I wish you a swift and successful resolution and a happy, pain-free future.

Re: OB/GYN Appt Today - AM I NUTS to ask for a hysterectomy?

Good morning
Well, I'm bumming a little bit. I had my appt. last week, and it wasn't quite what I expected.
I started my period last Monday, and saw the GYN Tuesday. Needless to say, I was bloated, cramping, crying. I had to unzip my pants while I sat in the exam room waiting for her, as I got more uncomfortable.
The GYN said the fibroid is sitting on top of my uterus, and she didn't see a need to go in and 'dig it out' due to its size, and that it probably took a while for it to grow. (ggggggrrrrr).
I mean, the only thing I'm dealing with is fatigue, heavy bleeding for a few days (which she also said may indicate adenymyosis...forgive my spelling). But the pain and cramping continue. It's all over my abdomen, not just the lower abdomen. It's driving me crazy, along with the bloating.
I go back for an ultrasound on the 16th, and the GYN will go over the results immediately afterward. She said she could perform the hysterectomy if I wanted...looking at 1-2 days in the hospital, up to 6 weeks to recover.
So, I can live with the pain, have the fibroid removed and nothing else, or have the hysterectomy and keep my ovaries. I'm more confused than before, and just feel like crying about it (and the pain) constantly. If the cramps aren't from this, I don't know what it could be.
Add to this the nightmares I've had about not being pregnant (I never have been). UGH...I'm praying!

I don't think your nuts I am only 21 and I asked for one when my dr suggested lupron I just asked for the surgery instead and he said yes if my insurance approved they did. We had tried Birth.Control laporscopic surgery twice I have a there year old and the same dr has seen me since I was 17 and through all my problems which right before surgery got down to constant pain for months and think that helped him be ok with my choice was he knew me well and knew,my history fully.
