Had PreOp Today -- more scared than ever.

I had my preop appt this morning. My doctor is wonderful. DH went with me. They didn't find it funny that I asked if I could change my mind. Just made me start thinking when the nurse asked about a living will, power of attorney, or emergency contact information.

Now I am really scared. Part of me knows that I will be fine but part doesn't. I have to be there tomorrow morning at 7:30 a.m. I guess it is finally real. Not sure if the tears are relief or fear. Can't let them out yet. Keep shuting them off.

I have decided to text my family in the morning and tell them that I love them before I go into surgery.

Sending hugs to all going to castle tomorrow.

Re: Had PreOp Today -- more scared than ever.

Hi!

I went to my pre-op appointment today as well. I am thankful that my husband was there and my doctor did a great job of trying to my mind at ease. My surgery is Wednesday - I have to be there at 5:30AM and the hospital is 40 minutes away - ugh!

I understand what you mean when you say that part of you knows that you will be fine and part doesn't. Every time I tell my husband that I am scared or he see's me crying over it, he asks me to specifically tell him what I'm worried about. When I say it out loud, somehow it doesn't seem as bad. Unfortunately, that only calms my nerves temporarily. I end up finding a reason to bawl some more.

I will be thinking of you tomorrow as I fight my own tears and fears for Wednesday. We are strong women and we will get through this!

Stay brave!

Michelle

Re: Had PreOp Today -- more scared than ever.

It's normal to be anywhere from a little nervous to out and out terrified before surgery. This is major surgery after all. It is also done often enough that doctors are well-practiced. Most women recovery just fine as long as they don't overdo things after the surgery.

It's a good thing that they asked about a living will, power of attorney, and emergency contact information! That means they are making an effort to do what you want. Interpersonal relationships are complicated. Many of us have people in our live who are a challenge. The most vocal and aggressive friend or relative isn't necessarily the one that you want playing gatekeeper when you're groggy - much less making major decisions for you. It's very helpful for your caregivers to have a legal document to back up what you've told them if someone is being difficult.

Best of luck tomorrow. Hope you soon feel as well as I do!

Re: Had PreOp Today -- more scared than ever.

Hang in there hon! They have to ask you all that stuff, i remember feeling kind of the same way after my pre-op discussion with my doc. I left thinking "I was fine with all this till we actually talked about all the possible complications"...Yikes!

However, I am safely on the other side, almost 12 months post op. Texting your family to tell you love them is a great thing to do!

Hugs to you! And be sure to post on the post op page when you are able and let us know you are safely on the other side too!
